A new organization known as Downtown Waco, Unlimit ed already has sponsored one event that gave cash registers a merry jingle. Three blocks of Austin Ave nue in the heart of the city were closed to all but food and emergency traffic for a showing of new automobiles. The "autorama-m a i 1" be came a park-like pedestrian's paradise where jaywalking rules did not apply. Twelve dealers showed 48 new 1958 cars, domestic and foreign, luxury and economic models. , The emphasis, of course, was to attract shoppers, and they came to Waco from a 90 mile radius. "This idea," said Mickey Lavy, manager of J. C. Penny Co., and persident of Down town Waco, Unlimiteed, "has turned into an optimistic snowball that has started roll ing fast. Everybody's enthu siastic." DWU, in addition to unified sales promotions, is planning more and bigger mall shows for early spring. In Two Other Towns The first big mall showing of new cars was something to see. Each block had its own central park of trees and shrubbery, beach umbrellas, colorful balloons, and music everywhere. Car Dealers Favor Economy of Area Most Medford area automo bile dealers favor a bill spon sored by Senator A. S. (Mike) Monroney (D-Okla.), which would require automobile manufacturers to affix to the windshields of new cars a label disclosing their suggest ed list prices. The proposed bill is the truth-in-labeling bill, accord ing to local sources.
