Cow Palace Jammed For Biliy Graham's Religious Crusade San Francisco HP Billy Graham had sin on the run today. The evangelist was frankly astonished at the Sunday afternoon crowd that turned out for the opening of his six-week crusade at the San Francisco Cow Palace. There were 18,000 jammed into the cavernous building and another 5,000 milling on the parking lot outside. Traf fic was jammed for six miles around the building. "This took us all by sur prise," Graham said. "We didn't expect anything like this. I had to show my creden tials to three different police men to get in!" It was the largest opening day audience Graham has had in 13 years of evangelism Graham had to give two ser mons one to those inside and another to those outside. The crovd, he said, "is in dicative of the spiritual hung er of our day." Explaining the aims of his crusade, Graham said sternly: "We have not come here to put on a show. We have hot come here to entertain you. We have come here to open this book, the Holy Bible...night after night, we are going to open these pages and see what the Bible says." Search for Peace After citing the evils of present - day life, Graham threw his arms aloft in a sweeping gesture and cried: "Is there some place I can find peace? If you live out here in California, and have a home and a family, you ought to be happy, but you're not. You're out of ballance that's whats' wrong. "This thing deep down in side you that is searching for something is your soul. You can't satisfy your soul by get ting drunk. You can't satisfy your soul by a sex experience. "Sin that's your trouble. That's my trouble. We are sin ners! Every person in this audience has broken the ten commandments." As his oratory warmed dur ing the hour-long sermon, Graham gestured violently, often with a quivering Bible in his left hand. L Vote For a Man Who Favors an OPEN ED (DOT POLICY! lis 'v " "Dishonesty, greed, cheat ing and lust are rampant on every side. Yoi are all sin ners. Come forward wheth er you understand it or not and make your encounter with Christ!" During his sermon, Graham touched on the troubles of movie star Lana Turner. "Something is wrong when We see a beautiful woman weeping because her daugh ter killed a man," he said. And of the wealthy resort city of Palm Springs, Calif., where he acquired a deep sun tan before arriving here, Gra ham said he found "more misery per square inch" there than anywhere he has been. After the sermon, 380 per sons moved forward to make a "decision for Christ." Coun cellors took them to a side room for interviews. As they came forward, Graham ask ed: "When have we ever had a moment like this in the Bay Area? It may never come again." " Hollywood IP TV Produ cer John Guedel has no per sonnel problems in his office, and he attributes this to the fact that the 100 persons in his company are all vice pres idents, including him. "No one is president," said Guedel, whose radio - TV shows have been in orbit na tionally for up to 20 years. "Everyone receives business cards with his name, title of vice president and then our name, address and phone number. "You'd be surprised how happy this makes people. When a 19-year-old switch board operator goes into a department store, for exam ple, to open a charge account and presents her business card, there's a little surprise, Then someone from the store phones and finds that she is a vice president of John Gue del Productions. The girl feels good and is happy about working for us." Guedel, whose shows in clude "People Are Funny" (20 years), "House Party," 14 years) and "You Bet Your Life (12 years), said the title applies equally to clerks, script girls, writers, execu tives and others. "We tried to have an office manager once, but no one wanted to be known as that," he said. Guedel said there's no per sonnel turnover to speak of. He said no one quits, and everyone's soft with the re sult that there's been only one firing. Known as Working Producer He is known as a working producer rather than an ex ecutive producer whose ac tual on-stage chores would be handled by regular produ cers. This means he's mighty busy, since there are 260 House Party shows yearly, 30 People are Funny pro grams and 39 Groucho Marx You Bet Your Life shows. He thinks of his shows as a mixture of variety and au dience participation. The kids on House Party are never a source of worry despite their candidness, he said; it's what adults say often about their Neighbors that scares him. Guedel, 43, who admits originating the singing com mercial (1937) but isn't sure Violence Charged To Cuban Leaders Los Angeles (IP) Dr. Rob ert Agramonte, who was sup ported as a presidential can didate by the Cuban rebels. said that the Batista govern ment "has kept its power in Cuba only through the exer tion of violence and crime." Cuban exiles who sympathize with the rebel cause, the former University of Havana sociol ogy professor spoke out against "press censorship, military control of the courts and the so-called 'emergency law," which empowered the Batista military forces to kill anyone supporting the gen eral strike." Agramonte, who arrived from Miami, Fla., yesterday, will share the podium with a former student of his, Dr. Jose R. Navarro, in pleading for the rebel cause. "I read about former President Herbert Hoover and his economy in govern ment studies a couple of years ago.. I thought we could always save money, so I wrote him and offered him the job. He answered that he wouldn't want a job unless he could make a definite contribution to it. "Well, I wrote back, telling him that we often had ele phants on our shows, and, after all, he as a Republican should know about them and, well, anyhow, he didn't an swer that one.
