16 Monday, April 28, 1958 MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. Hleadquarters for Wonderful Coffee is . . . Family Council Marian R. Sue should put an end to this affair. Sue M. It no longer mat ters. Marian R. Recently I in troduced my best friend, Sue, to my cousin, Ernest. I thought they would hit it off well together. I was right, but not in the way I had hoped. Last week Sue told me she had been having an affair with Ernest. I never would have believed it of either one of them. I can't understand Sue's being so foolish, but she told me she found Ernest fascinating and irresistible. I have begged Sue to break off this affair at once. She is a nice girl and this will ruin her. She says it no longer mat ters, but I think if she goes on this way, things will go from bad to worse. I have threaten ed to speak to her parents or Ernest's parents to make them stop, but I'm not sure I have the nerve to go through with it. Sue M. Marian talks like a child. I am 24 years old old enough to know what I m doing and accept responsibili ty for myself. My parents can't stop me and certainly Ernest's parents have nothing to say about it. I realize that it was foolish of me to get involved in this way in the first place, but now ' I'm no longer an innocent girl, I can't see what differ ence it makes if I go on with this affair. The truth is I am very much in love with Ernest and be lieved he had some real feel ing for me. I see now I was quite mistaken, so I've de cided to settle for whatever -brand of affecton I can get. I don't expect approval. I just want to know whether or not I'm right in feeling that Mari an's outrage and her threats . to ring in an alarm are out of place. The Council: No, we don't think Marian's attitude is out "of place. What's more, we don't believe Sue thinks it is, either. " Sue should ask herself why "she made this confession to ' Marian. It was not at all nec essary from any rational point of view. One reason may be Sue wanted lo do a little "boasting" afiout her esca pade. If this is the case, she is certainly far more childish and less responsible than she likes to admit to herself. . A second reason, and, we suspect, a very likely one, is Sue wants somebody to stop her. She has gotten rather out of her depth in this mess and doesn't quite know how to ex tricate herself. If she dared. she would perhaps like to tell all to her parents and seek their help. Sue needs to be far more honest with herself. She is violating her deepest feelings In this relationship with a man who does not even pre tend to give her any real affecton. She fools herself when she says the continua tion of the affair no longer makes any '-'difference." She knows she runs great risks and the continued brutal as sault on her own feelings can do irreparable emotional dam age. Sue wants to talk things out thoroughly with someone. Her girl friend, though a good, well-meaning frend, isn't the best choice. She should in stead choose her family physi cian, clergyman or a compe tent psychiatrist. The 70-year-old prelate re ceived Holy Communion just before he was wheeled into the operating room for drastic surgery necessitated by a blood clot in his right arm. Pope Pius was immediately informed of the successful operation. Amputation of the card inal's right arm does not bar him from saying Mass or con tinuing his functions.
