Can't Wrile Book in a Column I wish when, after reading one of .my columns, people feel like reaching for pen and paper to give me a good scolding, th?y would stop to do one of sev eral things. One, they might re-read the article to see if they got correctly what Dr. Alvarez I said; in many a case they don't. Two, they might wait for a few hours, or a couple of days to cool off, like I do on the rare occasions when I get angry. Three, my readers might see that when I note, let us say, that some epileptics have a quick tem per, or some stutterers have stuttering relatives, I didn't say that all have;. I wasn't talking about the many nice, friendly able and good-temper ed epileptics, or the stutterers who know of no one similarly afflicted in their family. Four, my readers should realize that when I write a column I can not write an encyclopedic ar ticle on the subject; some de tails must be left for another day. , Five, when I . differ with some psychiatrists, I may not have space in which to say how thoroughly I agree with many others, many of whom are to me dear and honored friends and teachers. Six, when I say how important heredity is, I may not have space in which to go on to say how important environment can be. Some day I'll write a column on that. When I say that neuroses and minor psychoses, epilepsy, and mental retardation are often inherited, I didn't say they al ways are. I know all about the cases in which the disease was caused by an encephalitis or an injury to the brain at birth. Not Necessarily Incurable Seven, when I say that a particular disease is often in herited I did not say that this fact makes it incurable. Many people accuse me angrily of having said this, but I never did, and never will. I know of several inherited illnesses, like diabetes and gout, many of which are easily kept under control. Many noble people I know have fought off insanity all their days. Mayo Foundation speak of the hereditary nature of mental troubles, I haven't the space in which to summar ize the enormous old and new literature that strongly sup ports my view, or to quote the many statements of the older psychiatrists and the fine gene ticists who have taught me so much; or I cannot take the space in which to publish ab stracts of the histories of the hundreds of patients I have seen, whose stories over whelmingly support my view. Surely, aren't we humans funny when we pit our preju dices or our slight experience perhaps in one case against a university professor's mass knowledge, gathered dur ing a liftime of reading and study and research! Every month several persons write to say, "You are all wrong about there being no'diet for arthritis. I ate no meat for two years and cured " my sore joints." One case of course, does not prove a thing. People are funny, they are also very nice. So many per sons, after writing me an angry letter, will add, as a cute P.S., "There, I am glad that is off my chest. I feel bet ter now, and I hope you don't mind my outburst. Actually, I like you, and I love your spirit as shown in your column." Since mentioned the fact that some persons scold me violent ly, dozens of sweet people have written to comfort me; they said they resented the idea of anyone's scolding me! Bless their kind hearts. Ill North Central 7092 "-r&e K K be expected in this world; the type of letter that distresses me is the one from some un happy, psychially bruised mother of a psychotic, epilep tic or retarded child who says, "How could you have done such a cruel and heartless thing as to write that column on heredity?" That woman's letter troubles me because the last thing I want to do. is to hurt or distress people. I wish I could show these hurt moth ers the pile of letters my sec retary brings me occasionally letters from mothers of re tarded children who say, "Thank you, from my Jieart for that column on heredity. From abundant unhappy experience in my family, I' know how truly you jpoke." Others go on to beg me to answer the questions that are tearing at their heart, as to which of their children is likely to in herit the family epilepsy or psychosis? How can one tell? Which children, can later safe ly marry? - I hope all my readers will sense that I resemble a cer tain service station owner whom I once met. In the big sign over his station he says, "Bill Smith ain't mad at no body!" Those are my senti ments. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail. .
