The Medical Table Salt and High Blood Pressure Recently, in Japan, investi gators have found signs of a of table salt in the diet of the people in a district ana their average blood pr?s- ass rS j 4 sure; the more salt they use the higher their blood press ures. I was just re reading a recent artile by Drs. L. K. Dahl and R. A. Love of Upton, N.Y., in which they studied the salt-eating habits of 1,346 adults in relation to their blood pressure. As we all know, there are persons who salt an egg, but nothing else, and then there are persons who, when their food is set before them, im mediately shake much salt over everything. Drs. Dahl and Love found that, of the 581 heavy salters, 61 had high blood pressure. Of the 630 with average salt intake, there were 43 with high blood pres sure. All those persons with a beginning hypertension who are anxious to do something about it might try eating their food as it comes from the kit chen. Sclerosis Vaccine for Mulfiple I have received letters from persons suffering from multiple scerosis asking about the Russian vaccine. Some accused our government of chauvinism and malicious ness in not quickly licensing the vaccine for distribution in this country but they were wrong. As I wrote these people, it is the business of a division of our Government to protect us from the premature use of medicines that can be harm ful, and so the sufferers should be patient, and should wait until this vaccine can be tested. What rumors I have heard from Europe were that the treatment was of doubt ful value. Today, I see that in the British Medical Journal (1:7, 1953) Dr. Dick and his associ ates have studied the vaccine. Their conclusion is that it con tains, not a cause of multiple sclerosis, but the virus of ra bies (hydrophobia), which is not a good thing to get mixed up with unless one has to. The investigators could not see that the vaccine was curative, and they warned against its use. Improvement in Menial Hospitals I recently read an address by Sen. Frank Carlson, in which he discussed the great improvement that Kansas has recently made in its handling of the insane. As a result of work started about 1947, in 1955, about 80 per cent of the patients who were admitted to mental hos pitals each year were being discharged well or improved, within a period of from three to six months. That this can save the state much money can be seen from the fact that in 1956, approximately 186, 000 mental patients were ad mitted. As Senator Carlson said, today some 16,000,000 people in the United States are going to be hospitalized for mental illness. Senator Carlson went on to say that, because of mental disturbances, industry suffers a $9,000,000,000 loss each year, partly because of absen teeism from work. Most of the accidents which cause dis ability occur because the per son is psychologically upset at the time. Alcoholism, which is closely related to psychosis, costs industry something over a billion dol lars a year. One out of every 50 workers is a problem drinker. As Dr. Karl Menninger said, in Kansas they certainly need ed more mental hospital build ings, but, more than that, they needed trained doctors and nurses and orderlies. What is needed in many states is a more extensive out-patient service for mentally disturbed persons. It is cheaper to take care of them in a clinic than in a hospital. A Mode of Determining Sex The world is getting to be a better place, and in the last few months I have re ceived a number of letters from people who, having had born to them an infant of un certain sex, are now having every possible test made to see if the child is definitely either a boy or a girl. They don't want their child to go through the awful experience of being brought up as a boy, when really it is a girl. These people, with the help of their home physician, got in touch with Drs. Moore and Barr, or Ontario in London, Canada. These men have shown that by examining under the mi croscope a bit of mucous membrane from the lining of the mouth, they can tell whether the tissue is male or female. In a girl, the nuclei of the cells contain a mass of "sex chromatin" which is absent in the cells of boys. Unfortunately, this test can not always settle the problem because in rare cases a child with a boy's type of cells will have ovaries in the abdomen. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail.
