Jack Brown turned in a good performance in the sec ond game when he allowed one hit to the Wolves of OCE. In the first game the Red Raiders were sparked by the grand slam homer by center fielder Rpn Maurer in the fourth. The hit came when Ashland Tops Track Clash With Eagle Point Saturday Ashland Ashland topped a three-way track meet here Saturday afternoon with a score of 70VS. Prospect nipped Butte Falls 3 to 2 in 11 innings and Tal ent High clipped Jacksonville 13 to 8. Herb Wheeler poked a sac rifice fly which enabled Floyd Scaife to cross home for the winning run with two out in the four extra inning at Prospect. Errors Hurt Dave Gardner got on base on an error to start out the inning. He was forced out by Scaife who gained third on a muffed throw on Mickey Ring's grounder. Butte Falls scored first on a walk, error and David Bak er's hit in the third inning irospect used three errors and a walk for a run in the fourth canto and a single by Jim Valentine, stolen base, error and squeeze bunt by Craig Gardner in the fifth Butte Falls tied up the game In the seventh on Jerry Fer guson's single and stolen base and Ellis' hit. Talent ran up nine of its scores in the first inning. Bill Snyder tripled in the chucker and there were three other hits, four bases on balls and an error. SKI CONDITIONS ' Skiing conditions wer reported fair Saturday but are expected to improve by this morning, according to the Crater Lake park rang' r station. There was no new snow reported during the 24 hour period ending at 4 p.m. Saturday. A total of 161 inches, covered with a slight crust, is presently on the ground. Saturday's temperatures were: high 40 and low 15. The 4 p.m. temperature was 36. A slight wind was also reported. Both the south and west roads are reported open to the rim with roads bare. Duck Busts Mile Mark At Relays Des Moines, Iowa Jim Grelle of "Oregon scam pered to a new collegiate mile record for the Drake relays Saturday, upsetting Australian Alex Henderson with a spurt in the last 220 yards for a time of 4:07.9. Grelle's clocking broke the meet record of 4:10.7 set by Deacon Jones of Iowa for collegiate compe titors last year. He was the underdog to Henderson, who . Friday set a new collegiate rec ord of 8:51.3 for the two mile, and Henderson start ed like he would win this event too. Henderson set the pace for the first three quarters, but Grelle, whose best this year was 4:06.7 indoors, never was worse than fourth. He moved into sec ond place on the third lap and then passed Henderson with half a lap to go. From then on his finish ing kick simply widened the margin and he had a 10-yard advantage at the tape. Henderson, too, broke teh old record with a time of 4:09.4. Stanford Gains Swimming Wins Barkeley, Calif. OR Stanford won both varsity and frosh divisions 59-27 and 59-26 in a swimming meet with Cal here' Saturday. The Stanford varsity team had two double winners. Rob in Moore won the 100 and 220 freestyle and Tom Petersen won the 50 freestyle and the 200 yard breaststroke. game for the Wolves came on a home run by left-fielder Jerry Chapelle. Brown bunted and the OCE pitcher threw the ball into center field try ing to get Nevi. Nevi went to third and Brown second. Jones then hit his sacrifice fly. The Wolvas threatened once in the first ining when they loaded the bases with nobody out. Raider catcher Jim Mc Abee threw OCE's Barry Adams out at first. . Brown struck out the next two hitters. The Raiders now stand 5-0 in OCC play with a single game against Oregon Tech coming up Tuesday at 3 p.m. on the Raider diamond. Ashland Southern Ore gon college walloped Oregon College of Education just about out of the ball park in racking up a 15-2 Oregon Collegiate conference victory Friday on the Raider dia mond. Jim McAbee and Larry Maurer both contributed home runs while the Red Raiders racked up 20 base hits with nine of them going for extra bases. Phil Sword and Chuck Nevi were the big run pro duhers with Sword knocking in four and Nevi three on a three-run triple. The OCE Wolves are de fending OCC champions but they could not seem to show much, committing five errors and hitting safely only four times. Dave D'Olivo took the win for the Raiders by going six innings and giving up only three hits and two runs be fore he gave way- to Dale Walters who went the final three innings. The Raider attack was not all offense for with a man on first in the eighth inning Wal ters pitching struck out the batter and catcher McAbee on a quick throw got the runner leading off first on a perfect throw to Maurer. The Raider infield also came up with a double play going from Will ie Jones to Jim Dietz and over to Maurer. The fifth inning was the big one for the Raiders. They scored six runs on six hits and three OCE errors. Jones led off with a triple and scored on an error on the OCE catcher. Larry Mau rer walked followed by a walk to his brother Ren and both moved ahead on an error, Sword then came through with his triple for two runs. Second baseman Dietz singled in Sword and Nevi followed with a triple to left and while trying to stretch the hit to a homer scored when the catcher lost the ball. The Raiders got another runner as far as third base before the inning ended with the men of SOC on the high end of a 9-0 lead. McAbee got his four-bagger on a line drive to right field that scored Jones from third. Larry Maurer hit his homer in the sixth when he opened the inning . Jones had a terrific day with four hits in five trips to the plate. He scored four times. Two of Jones' hits were triples. Larry Maurer in going four-for-five at the plate raised his batting average to .466 giving him 22 hits on 47 trips to the plate . UCLA Posts Win Over Stanford Stanford, ' Calif. dfl UCLA, paced by Rafer John son, defeated Stanford Satur day, 81V2-49V2, in a dual Pa cific Coast conference track meet witnessed by some 4,000 persons. Johnson set new meet rec ords in both the javelin and discus events with heaves of 237 feet 10 inches and 170 feet 9Va inches respectively. Hedrick JH Victor Over Ashianders Four Hedrick Junior High school records tumbled Fri day when the Hornets cap tured all three divisions of a track meet with Ashland at the Medford high oval. Hedrick dominated the ninth grade action 96 to 26, nosed out the Lithians 58 to 55 in the eighth grade session and won the seventh grade contention 56 to 22. The records fell in the ninth grade meet. Warren Parke put the shot 46 feet six inches, Bob Mclntyre high jumped 5-6, Danny Sieg broad jumped 19-1 and Bruce Bray toured the 660-yard dis tance in 1:35.1. Hedrick ninth had firsts in 13 of the 14 events and swept seven of the contests. Ash land scored a sweep in the only event it won, the three- fourths mile, taken by Boh encamp. Bray Wins Three Bray was a triple winner for Medford, claiming the high hurdles and discus as well as the shot. Dan Sieg took the 150 dash along with the broad jump and Mine Monroe won the 330 and the low hurdles. The Hornets were without the services of Phillip Mor ris, who was hurt in an auto wreck Thursday. He runs the 660 and 1320 and throws the javelin. Morris holds tiie school record in the 1320. Ashland won seven of the 13 eighth grade events. Mike McCullough captured the broad jump and both dashes for Hedrick and Mike Morris copped the high hurdles and high jump. Kirsher was an Ashland double victor in the 330 and 660. Hedrick had seven of the nine seventh grade firsts and swept the shot put and 150. Jim Bandy got top honors in the shot, the broad jump and 150 for the Hornets. Richard Muller heaved the javelin 128 feet, 11 inch es and Bill Kropp hurled the discuss 100-10V2. John Davis, Grants Pass, pole vaulted 9-9 Vern Swanson, a sixth grader, vying with the sev enth, took the 330-yard run, tied for first in the high jump, was third in the broad jump and anchored the relay team for CP which had six of the nine firsts .Robert Johnson was first in the low hurdles, tied for tops in the broad jump and was on the relay team. , Golf Driving Range Opened Blunt's golf driving range opened for the season this week end just off Highway 99 at the north edge of Phoenix, The range will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. There are three holes on the range which is 2Y2 miles south of Medford, Owner Bill Blunt said a putting green will be ready in the near fu ture. The Tornado swept a twin bill from the Klamath Falls Pelicans here yesterday and split with Ashland on the Grizzly diamond Friday after noon. Busting up the scuffle with a run in the bottom of the seventh stanza, the Pear capital club nicked Klamath in the Saturday opener 4 to 3. Second game tally was to 0. Ashland's determined ball club tipped Medford 1 to in Friday's fast moving first conflict. The tense tussle, a heart-breaker for the Tornado club, took only an hour to complete. Medford snapped back to get a 2 to 0 nod in the wind-up. Only the opening scrambles were considered in the con ference standings. Second frays were non-leaguers Grants Pass tripped Ashland 10 to 2 yesterday to remain the unmarred leader and push Ashland back into a tie with Medford. Durante Bats In Runs Dick Durante batted in the winning run, with Ray Kono pasek scoring, in the league scrape with the Pelicans. Med ford had taken a 3 to 1 jump in the fourth frame but Klam ath knotted the engagement in the top of the seventh. The Tornado accomplished the verdict on just three hits. In the kings-x battle, with Ron Peery pitching for the first time in his Tornado base ball career and doing a fine job, Medford scored two runs in the first inning and one in the third and survived sev eral threats. Klamath tabulated first in the opener with Dean Dun- son doubling, going to third base on a ground out and reaching home on a passed ball in the second inning Medford collected its three in the fourth when Larry Brown cleared the bases with a dauble. A walk, fielder's op tion and error filled the bags For the Pels in the seventh, Jim Hall tripled, Smiley Her rera singled and went to second on an error and Pat Carney singled. Konopasek walked in the bottom of the seventh and Tom Laurance was safe on a fielder's choice. A passed ball put Konopasek on third. Durante hit a grounder to Third Baseman Bill Worlein and Konopasek scored when Worlein threw to first base. Laurence Winner Laurance was the winning pitcher, throwing to the last four batters and giving up one hit. Klamath got five bingles off the Medford start er, Dennis Barr, who walked two and whiffed four. Blake Griggs struck out four Med ford men and walked three. The Tornado got its first inning runs in the second game on a hit batter, base on balls, single by Peery and two errors. A fielder's option, a wild pitch and a single by Peery resulted in the third inning marker. Peery gave up hits to Her- rera and Rick Depew along with a walk in the fifth in ning but one runner was caught at the plate, another was forced out .and one bat ter flied out. He struck out five and walked five. Weird Hop Brings Score Bob Johnson's single, with the ball taking a weird hop over Medford shortstop Cal vin Dean, drove in the only run for Ashland in the first and counting game on Friday in the Lithia City. The mark er crossed in the fourth in ning. Medford used two mis cues, a hit by Cal Dean and a sacrifice flyout by Larry Brown for the two tallies in the fourth Inning of the sec ond. The conference ruckus was well - played encounter which required only an hour to complete. Medford defense Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport Downs Pels With Ashiand held up without a miscue and possible damage from the lone Grizzly error was wiped out with a double play. Ashland pitcher Pete Stem pie limited the Tornado to just two hits, spaced three innings apart. He whiffed seven batters and issued no free passes to the bases. Only two runners of each team got as far as second base and they were the only runners left on base. No Ashianders were left on. Runners Caught Medford hurler Jerry An derson held Ashland to three safe blows and walked just one man but faced only 19 batters in six innings. He fan ned five. One runner was caught stealing, . another was picked off base and a third was trying to stretch a single for an extra base. The catch and pick outs were in the third inning when Anderson yielded two of the hits. - ; In the fourth inning with one out for Ashland, Harley Dickerson drew a walk. Bill Maurer forced Dickerson out at second and was safe at first. Maurer was safe at sec ond on a steal. Johnson then slashed the ball to shortstop. Dean charged in for whan normally would have been a good fielding chance but the ball took the crazy hop, as fate would have it, and con tinued on into left field. Maur er scored, but Johnson trying to make second on the throw in was tagged out. Stemple faced just 23 Med ford batsmen in seven Innings. Ken Durkee and Dick Dur ante socked singles for Med ford and Jim Matteson and Pat Simpson hit the second inning safeties for Ashland. Two-Hitler Tossed Tom Laurance threw two- hit ball for Medford in the five inning non-leaguer. He also had perfect fielding be hind him. He gave up a triple to Stemple when rightfielder Jerry Fields lost the fly ball in the bright sun. Dennis Johnson belted a high fly which fell near the left field line for the other safety. Laurance settled down after issuing two walks, the only ones, in the first inning. He whiffed seven. A double play got him out of danger in the frame. Duane Nelson gave up four hits to Medford, he struck out one and hit two batters.' Ray Konopasek, Laurance and Peterson, as well as Cal Dean hit safely for Medford, Peter son doubled.
