I MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Friday, April 25, 1953 Graham's Crusade To Open In San Francisco Cow Palace By RICHARD M. HARNETT United Press Correspondent San Francisco TP Billy Graham opens a crusade of evangelism this Sunday here in the Golden Gate city, which he calls a "strategic" objective in the battle be tween sin and salvatic. "A spiritual torch in San Francisco," Graham told his crusade workers "could have a tremendous impact on the world." The crusade was booked for six weeks in the huge Cow Palace on the outskirts of the city. Graham has an op tion to extend it for two ad ditional weeks. The climax will be an open-air rally in the 60,000-capacity Kezar Sta dium, site of the, annual Shrine East-West football game. The 39-year-old North Caro lina preacher has had a squad of trained "pro"' crusade workers here since last No vember. They are the same skilled team that managed the Madison Square Garden cru sade last year and the Gra ham Rallies in London, Glas gow and Calcutta. Many Volunteers They have been recruiting thousands of ushers, choir members, counsellors, and ministers to boost the crusade in churches throughout the area. The team also has been trying to raise 5227,000 in advance money to cover ex penses. Lowell W. Berry, treasurer of Billy Graham San Fran cisco Bay Cities Crusade, Inc., admitted that donations have not been coming in up to ex pectations. But "We have " been able to pay all our bills," he added. Another $179,000 in the budget was anticipated from voluntary contributions at the Cow Palace. Besides expenses of the crusade itself, Graham needs 5360,000 to pay for six nationwide television broad casts that will take the Mike Wallace time spot on Satur day nights. He hoped TV viewers would send in dona tions also. Spiritual Success Seen However, Graham and his workers were not concerned primarily with the financial success of the crusade. An aide of the evangelist said the outlook for spiritual suc cess was excellent. Three thousand prayer groups have been organized for the crusade, and prepara tions were being made for an organized follow-up campaign Methodists Tell Sermon Topic Dr. George G.
