By EUGENE BURNS Ranger-Naturalist Anyone can tell a porcu-J pine when he sees one, but what many people don't real ize is that there are many different kinds of these "pigs with spines." The biggest lives in the Old World Asia, Africa, Europe. He is the crested por cupine, so called because of a crest of 22-inch quills along his neck and back. The adults exceed three feet in length and weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. Unlike his tree - dwelling cousins in the Western Hemi sphere, he is a digger who prefers to live in the ground. In Central and South Am erica, other varieties are found in the jungle areas. One of the most interesting is a prehensile-tailed porky. There is a sound reason for his hav ing a naked tail. He uses it to hang from a tree limb. Nonetheless, the North American tree "porcupine . is fully as interesting as any. He is a slow moving animal who has few worries and doesn't need to hurry. He knows his coat of some 30,000 barbed spines will make practically all other animals leave him alone1. The quills are about IVi inches long. A few seconds after they enter the victim the porcupine never throws them, by the way fish-hooklike barbs near the tips sud denly expand. From that moment on, un less someone extracts them by means of a hard jerk, they work their way farther into the flesh. . Eventually they either cause gangrene or reach a vital organ. The female American por cupine weighs about 15 pounds. Her baby weighs about one pound at birth. It comes into the world loaded with spines and in two weeks is ready to be on its own. (Released by McCIure Newspaper Syndicate) Free: By special arrange ment with the editors of the Encyclopedia Americana, my panel of judges will award each week to the reader who sends . me the best true-life nature adventure, the best nature observation, or the best question on nature and wildlife, a 30-volume set of this world-famous reference work in a handsome Sealcraft binding. SP 3-5308 DICK HANS, Manager The Hollywood Scene Hollywood (IP) Holly wood's newest dog star, "King," and his trainer have ajough, off-camera scene com ing up in 10 days when the animal stakes his champion ship and reputation on the outcome of the far western sheepherding competition. In a way, Hollywood too goes on trial at the May 4' events at the California State Fair Grounds in Sacramento. Several dog owners and trainers have told King's own er, Charles Null of Dixon, Calif., that they suspect the four-time champion may have "gone soft" during the film ing of Samuel Goldwyn Jr.'s "Proud Rebel." And they point out that King traded the hard, cold ground for a motel room of his own in Cedar City, Utah, during location filming. Remains Unspoiled "Now folks are trying to use this against him," Null said. "King has not gone soft or fat. He's a good intelligent dog and it'll take more than running around with movie stars to turn his head." Nevertheless, Null, a florid faced sheepherder, admitted that dogs from all over the United States, Canada, Eng land and Australia will be gunning for King. "Just like the bullies in a bar they want to take a swing at a movie star. Figure if they can lick ' him their glory will be"doubled." King's co-stars, Alan Ladd, By HAZEL JOHNSON United Press Writer Ladd's 11-year-old son David, and Olivia De Havilland, meanwhile, hasten to King's defense. King's remarkable herding in the picture draws applause from everyone who has seen the movie and it would take more than loss of his champ ionship to hurt his movie ca reer," Ladd said. "But I don't think any dog in the world can beat him." King, a border collie, isn't "pretty" in the usual animal sense of the word. But the matter-of-fact, ' hardworking way he handles sheep is ad mirable and endearing. King was nominated for a sPatsy, the animal equivalent of an Oscar or Emmy, this year for his work in "Wild is the Wind." Reared on the range, King is not housebroken. The bill for rug damage was $75 in Cedar City. But he's a work ing dog and "not a spoiled pet," Null said. "That's why I don't think Hollywood hurt him a bit. He's got his feet on the ground." In the sheepherding trials a dog must leave his master, go 200 yards away, circling around behind five sheep and bring them home. At an arm signal he must drive the sheep 175 yards off to the right, through a gate and across the course at right angles to an other gate and back home and into a pen all in less than 12 minutes. King's record time is six minutes. Film Instruction Due in High Schools Portland ttPI A plan for the use of film for full in struction of physics and chem istry in some Oregon high schools on an experimental basis was disclosed here Tues day in a report to the State Board of Higher Education, j Dean James W. Sherburne, dean of the General Exten sion Division, said the de partment of visual instruction does not plan to replace teach ers with films but that the teacher's explanations would be augmented by film. The plan calls for 15 schools to use the films of Encyclopida Films, Inc., and another group of 15 schools would use the traditional teacher methods as a control. Sherburne said the physics films would cost $14,000 but could be bought on yearly in stallments. He said the great est advantage from such teaching methods would be to small schools which have limited science offerings. There was hope that the Fund for Advancement of Ed ucation would help finance the program. r DOW TV SERVICE Expert Service All Makes PHONE SP 2-7994 Day or Nite We wish to thank everyone for . making Our Grand Opening a Success HERE ARE THE WINNERS .1st Prize-Mrs. Nona Lucas, 311 S: Oakdale, Medford.
