Pages 1 to 6 ILLINOIS VALLEY Library Dedication Held Human Head Lice Found in Multnomah Portland OPI The first serious invasion, of human head lice in Multnomah coun ty in 15 years was reported Tuesday. Health Department officials said the infestation has been found chiefly in public schools in the county since the first of the year. The outbreak has been pretty well centralized in the mid-Multnomah county area, health officals said. Forty out of 700 children in one school had it. F. Sydney Hansen, county health officer, said he hated to generalize on where the head lice was coming from but that he was forced to con clude that migrant families arriving in the county in poverty-stricken conditions are bringing them. SOCIETY FORMED London (IP) The first steps have been taken to form a SovistArab friendship socie ty in Moscow, Radio Moscow xeported today. Allied Split Seen Russian Strategy - Washington (IP) Soviet strategy is designed to split the Western allies instead of setting up an honest to good ness summit parley that might ease East-West tensions, U. S. officials concluded Tues day. Diplomatic experts said they saw clear evidence of the "soviet game" in the Mos cow decision to meet separte ly or not at all with Amer ican, British and French dip 1 o m a t s during preliminary diplomatic meetings - in Mos cow. This "one-by - one", pro cedure, these experts said, shows - Soviet Foreign Min ister Andrei Gromyko has Kremlin orders to try to find some way to divide the allies. The Red strategy, they said, is to find and exploit possible points of difference which may be developed in the in dividual diplomatic meetings. RESEARCHER DIES Princeton, N. J.' Iff) Dr. Geoffrey W. By HELEN BOTTEL Cave Junction Dedica tion ceremonies and open house for the Illinois Valley branch of Josephine county library drew close to 150 visi tors to the newly-opened building in Cave Junction Sunday afternoon. Among the guests were many from Grants Pass, in cluding members of the li brary board, the county court, city officials, and others who have worked with local per sons and organizations to ward gaining a library for this area. Judge Lathrop gave a brief history of library work in Jo sephine county, stating that a board was appointed in 1914, and negotiations with the Car negie Foundation were start ed in 1917. The Grants Pass library was completed in 1921. Before the Carnegie library was built, books were lent in a room of" the court house, with Miss Maude Barnes as first librarian. -In 1947 the Kerby branch station was opened, largely through ef forts of Mrs. Arthur Cribb, a teacher 'at Kerby school. A Wolf Creek station was organized last year, and Mrs. Floyd of Holland lends coun ty library books on a limited basis at the Holland, store. Circulation, said Judge Lath rop has increased from 12, 109 to over 174,000 yearly. Mrs. McGregor, chairman of the library board, publicly thanked local organizations for their generous donations to the library. Organizations which helped furnish supplies and fixtures for the new library are the Illinois Valley Federated Women's club, the Illinois Valley Garden club, Veterans of World War I, barracks 146, Kerbyville lodge 55 and the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. The building has 2,100 square feet of floor space and cost S28.000 with the furni ture. The property was pur chased for $1,500, making the total outlay to the county 530,000. Friends gathered Sunday afternoon at the newly-purchased home of the Don Or tons to give the family a sur prise housewarming. Guests included Mesdames Melvin Starks, Hubert Love, Bill Love, Dave Wilson, Rob ert Bottel, Karl Preston, Eu gene Pulley, Alvin Bullard, Bob Breckenridge, James Cook, Jim Quinn, Bob Quinn, Miss Jean Bullard and a num ber of children. Sending a gift but unable to attend were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hines. Back at their summer home in Selma are Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Alcorn of Crescent City. Alcorn is a retired pos tal service employee. Word has reached here of the death of William A. Gil lespie, a former president of the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce, and at one time operator of the Selma Log Cabin store. He succumbed to a sudden illness Sunday, April 13, at West Fir, Ore., where he had been operating a market for the past year. The deceased leaves his wife, Frances, and two chil dren. Funeral services "were held at Oakridge, Ore., at 2:30 p.m. April 16. Mr. Gillespie worked at the Model market, Cave Junction, before taking over the Selma store. Mrs. Alton Sowell. a past president of the Kerby Parent Teachers association, was named president of the Illinois Valley High school PTA at a meeting held Thursday night. Newly - elected vice presi dent is Mrs. J. Van Johnson, while Mrs. Pat Whiteley is secretary and Mrs. Monte Heald, treasurer. Speaker of the evening was Elmer Fleming, county-unit school superintendent, who discussed the school budget which will come before the people at the May 5 election. Flemine said the county is losing at least 16 teachers this year, and told oi tne aiincui ties he and the school board faced in finding replacements, this because of a lower salary schedule than that of many other areas, and a preference on the part of teachers to live in larger towns. Spokane, Wash., was charged with obtaining money under false pretenses after appearing before Dist rict Court Judge James Main Tuesday. Ashland early Tuesday by state police. He was first ap prehended for having out dated license plates when a further check revealed he was wanted on other charges. He is being held in Jack son county jail on $1,500 bail.
