Here's a sport where equip ment must be ust right. Most jumpers pack their own chutes to assure safety. Undergraduates at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and other schools spend their time between Greek literature and modern philosophy diving from airplanes for the sheer sport of it Their extracur ricular activity works like this: Participants wear two chutes (just in case!) on a single harness and are carried aloft in small planes which circle at 80 miles an hour about 2,000 feet up. Since all sky divers are sure to reach the ground (whether their chutes open or not), the competition involves how close they can land to a prescribed target usually an X-shaped marking. In Europe, where the sport is highly popular, they've added an even more daredevilish feature: delayed jumps, dur ing which the diver, just as though he were diving into a swimming pool, is judged on the form he displays before pulling the rip cord at the last instant.
