0 MARKING NEW STEP in war on cancer, Dr. Harry Rubin, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, says he has devised method for causing cancer in chicken cells with virus. (International) Study Highway Plan I n Southwest Oregon Cave Junction More than 250 northern Californians and southern Oregonians met re cently in Crescent City, Calif, to discuss better access to southwestern Oregon's rich lumber and mining regions in adjoining Josephine county. It was pointed out that the existing 85 - mile highway which serves as the only con nection between the two counties, is too high, narrow and crooked for present-day traffic, plus future demands. A plan to realign the high way in the Siskiyou moun tains was presented by Cali fornia State Sen. Randolph Collier, who conducted the meeting. Approximately 60 linear feet of large-scale con tour maps were posted in the auditorium, tracing a survey route of the proposed rea lignment. According to the survey, the new road would leave the present Highway 99 (Redwood highway) at the southern foot of the mountain range, pass under Hazelview Summit through a tunnel, and rejoin the present road near the Oregon-California line. Esti-!few years, matea cost oi tne tunnel is $2,000,000. The complete re alignment job, is estimated at $5 million, depending on how far south the new road extends. The proposed road would eliminate all but 10 of the 144 curves on , the mountain ous portion of the Redwood highway. If the tunnel were built, it would be 1400 feet long, and would do away with some three miles of steep, curves and narrow switch backs which slow up traffic on Hazelview summit and create snow hazards during the winter. Collier said it would also reduce the grade from the present 7 to 6 per cent. Since all the proposed im provements would be in Cal ifornia, the initial drive, Sen. Collier said, will be to get the California State Highway department to adopt the plan and construct and maintain the project as a part of t h e state highway system. The Senator, who is chairman of j the interim committee on highways, said he hoped this might happen within the next SHADY COVE School Hearing Planned The Shady Cove school dis trict budget will be consid ered during a neanng on April 21, starting at 8 p.m in the Shady cove school. The school board will pre sent and explain the proposed budget. Any residents having questions, complaints, or sug gestions are asked to present them then. Fallowing the meeting, voting notices will be posted for the election which is scheduled two weeks after the posting of notices. The Shady Cove PTA held a regular meeting on Tuesday April 8, at the Shady Cove school band room. A report was given on the pre-Easter food sale held Saturday at Kennedy's Market. A total of $43.25 was cleared on the sale. Newly elected officers for the coming school year are president, Mrs. Bergren; vice president, Mrs. Ed Brown secretary, Mrs. Gilbert Elder, and treasurer Mrs. Wesley Jones. Members voted to par ticipate in the Cancer cam paisn, and Mrs. Gene House will meet as a PTA represent ative with the concer com mittee. Following the meeting refreshments were served by the fifth grade mothers. Mrs. Eva McGilvray of Yreka, Calif., spent the week end visiting with her daugh ter and family, Mr. and Mrs Kenneth Paulson of Shady Cove. Other guests who had dinner and spent Easter day visiting with the Paulson's were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Davis and children of Ashland. The Cove-Ettes, women s volleyball team of Shady Cove, wil play the Rogue Val ley girls Saturday, April 12, at the YMCA in Medford. Miss Carole Sheppard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sheppard of Shady Cove, whose marriage to Bill -Lit-tlefield, son of Mr. and Mrs. Travis Littlefield of Shady Cove, is to take place soon, was guest of honor at a sur prise wedding shower given for her on Saturday after noon, April 5. The shower was given at the home of Mrs. Ray Briggs of Shady Cove with Mrs. Briggs,. Mrs. Jim Vanderlip and Mrs. Jim Hop kins of Shady Cove as host esses. The refreshment table held two cakes made in the form of parasols with pink and white icing. Miss Suzi Chubb was in charge of pouring cof fee, Miss JoAnne Dickenson poured tea and the serving of the cake and ice cream was done by Miss Phyllis Briggs. In the center of the living room was an Army jeep pull ed by an Army, mules, both made of painted cardboard.
