Quotes From the News By UNITED PRESS Kansas City Former Secretary of State Dean Acheson, in blaming President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles for the attitudes America's Allies hold toward this country: "By means of a policy which has been an old assortment of retrenchment, beligerency. moralism, and bad manners lhey have forced our allies, to look upon -us in a light in which we never appeared to them during the war or in the eight years after it." Washington An Air Force spokesman, in saying the B-47 is a good plane despite two B-47 crashes, Tuesday and one last Thursday: ... . "We've had a bad week, but the B-47 has a good record, there's no question about that." Moscow First Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan, in tell ing American concert pianist Van Cliburn of Kilgore, Tex., that his appearance in Moscow was a great service to the United States: "You have been a very good politician for your country. You have done belter than the American politicians have." 1 Medford Tribune 2nd SECTION MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 1958 Pages 1-8 War Correspondents Waiting For Some Action in In GIANT PARADE The San Francisco Giants Willie Mays (waving), and Hank Sauer (in front of Mays), are cheered by San Franciscans as they ride in a gala parade that officially welcomed the team to their new home, just prior to the opening of the 1958 major league season. The Giants will play their first game at home, against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. By ARNOLD DIBBLE United Press Correspondent Djakarta OPI "Let's face it men," said the still youthful correspondent whom I last had seen in Korea near ly seven years ago, "we're a bunch of over-age war corres pondents looking for a war that isn't there." So far as can be learned from sources of every politi cal and national complexion there has been no real test of strength as yet. Whether there ever will be is doubtful, even at this stage. More than likely, it is thought by many here, Indonesia's in finite capacity for compr omise will be called upon to reach some kind of settle ment. The war being "fought" by the Padang rebel radio just isn't the same one to be seen here. Some Facts It is difficult to sort rumor from truth, but three facts can be stated definitely: Rebel claims that more than 150 central government troops were killed at the March 12 paratroop landings on Pakanbaru are just not true. Americans who were there and witnessed the landings confirmed that no one was killed and that there were virtually no shots fired in anger. The government later, said one man was killed in a fire fight. In the Medan fighting, there were some brisk skirm ishing and some casualties. But according to good infor mation, there never was any doubt once the government moved in the government troops were in control all the way. Some of the rebel claims have bordered on the ridicu lous: They claimed bombing of Bandung, for example. Ac cording to persons there, Bandung never had such a quiet week end. Or the "re capture" of Pakanbaru. Long Day No "war. correspondent" leads a longer day or a more sedentary life than the ones here. Because of the oppres sive heat, many of the import ant government meetings and statements come late in the day. Rumors are a rupiah a dozen but hard facts are hard to come by.
