6 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Monday, April 14, 1958 Is That Bv. EUGENE BURNS Rjnger-Njruralist The wolverine. Is he a mean, diabolical, powerful animal? Or is he an overpublicized, tail-between-fhe-legs softy? ij wrote a piece taking the for mer point of view. I was call ed by an Oakland sourdough who said he had trapped many a wolverine in Alaska and that the animal was an out- and-out coward. Today Armas Lamp! of Billings, Mont., comes to my defense. He writes: "I take very much interest In your column and have meant to write before and this wolverine controversy fi nally roused me. "What I am about to write I have not gleaned sitting in the roadhouses but from being out on the trapline and at the mercy of the elements. "The wolverine being a scavenger has evolved to the point where he has a great po tential for cunning and crafti ness particularly inland in the far northland. "Several things make it hard for a trapper to deal with a wolverine. They are constantly traveling; the wea ther conditions in the Arctic make it hard for a trapper to make a weatherproof set; the trapper seldom makes an out-and-out play for the wolverine tmL -snimaJ h?r "ired his line and ravaged ft. "First time out the young wolverine perhaps is naive. But after several lessons in toe-pinchings (if he is lucky enough not to get hooked the first time and runs into traps that are inefficient from being choked with snow or steps in the trap sideways, or runs into small martin line traps) the wolverine becomes smarter and smarter. "After his cunning develops for several seasons and his luck holds, then the wolver ine may convince the exas perated trapper that this ani mal is truly the 'reincarnation of the devil himself.' Should Trail Ono "Anyone doubting the wol verine's strength and endur ance need only to trail one as I did. Everything seemed fa vorable to me the trail through the fresh snow looked like a hog had wallowed through. The going, obviously, was tough for the wolverine. As for me, I was young, in wonderful condition, and my snowshoes were the best for that soft-snow condition. With the odds in my favor, we went all day with a full, head of steam. When darkness came, he was still ahead of me. I might add, I spent a cold night under a spruce and never tried it again. "Frankly, we didn't have many wolverines on our trap lines but those few did a lot of damage. And of these, only one was on his way to becom ing full 'educated' and show . ing signs of the diabolical way in which his mind work ed. I hope I have contributed something." P.S.
