ANSWER NMQi. 3HX SI 3H No Statistical Connection Held Between Smoking, Peptic Ulcer I By DELOS SMITH Uniled Press Science Editor New York (IP) A medical statistician who had a promi nent part in building a statis- " tical con n e c- ", tion between cigarette smoking and can cer, now concedes that smoking is neither an im portant nor a direct cause of Jw P e p tic ulcer. Deios smith Dr. Kic hard Doll proceeded statistically with peptic ulcer much as he had with lung cancer. That is, there were statistical com- parisons of the smoking habits of persons with the disease against the smoking habits of persons who didn't have it. But as regards peptic ulcer, these comparisons "may be interpreted in several ways," Doll said. One way is that the egg came before the chicken "The presence of an ulcer stimulated the desire to smoke," since some ulcer pa tients report their symptoms are relieved by a cigarette. Predisposition Involved Another way is that psy chologically a given person is predisposed both for peptic ulcer formation and cigarette smoking. The third possibility, he continued, is that smoking directly contributes to "the producton or maintenance of some of the ulcers." Weed May Assist Leukemia Battle London, Ont. (IP) Can adian medical scientists have discovered a compound which they believe may help fight leukemia and cancer growths, it was reported.. The compound is extracted from a weed, the wild peri winkle, which grows abund antly in Jamaica. Dr. Robert L. Noble, of the University of Western On tario and an associate, J. H. Cutts will present the find ings of their research at a meeting of the American As sociation for Cancer Research in Philadelphia tomorrow. Research on the weed was started nine years ago by the Western University scientists after Noble heard that na tives in Jamaica brewed a tea from the periwinkle as a treatment for diabetes. A factor in the weed was found to reduce the white blood cell count in rats, and since leukemia, a deadly can cer of the blood, causes white blood cells to multiply uncon trollably, the scientists tried to alienate the mysterious fac tor for use as a possible weap on against the disease. French Miners Off Jobs for More Pay Paris, April 12 (IPi Ap proximately 250,000 French miners walked of their jobs Saturday in a 24-hour warn ing to premier Felix Gaillard's Government that they will stage a full-scale strike unless their wage demands are met. Reports from all over France indicated that today's one-day strike call was obey ed by about 90 per cent of France's state-employed coal, Iron, Slate and Potassium miners. But if the latter were so, you would expect the statistics to reveal a greater proportion of heavy smokers among ul cer patients than among the "controls" who had no ulcers. Doll's statistics did not bear out the expectation. However, an unknown fac tor was involved here, he said. Had heavy smokers with ulcers cut down on their smoking or stopped altogether as part of the medical treat ment of their ulcers? Physi cians often give such advice to ulcer patients, he pointed out. His statistics were derived from questionnaires; there was no chance of getting this question answered. So "he took smokers with ulcers one by one as they were admitted to a hospital for treatment. One was advised to stop smok ing, the next was hot. This went on until there were 40 who had been told to stop and 40 who hadn't. All 80 were given the same medical treatment, which in cluded four weeks in bed After treatment, the ulcers of 75 per cent of those who were told to stop smoking, were at least two-thirds healed and the average reduction in the size of their ulcer cavities was 78.1 per cent. Two-Thirds Healed The ulcers of 58 per cent of those who had been told nothing and so had continued to smoke at the same rate were at least two-thirds heal ed, and the average reduc tion in the size of ulcer cavi ties was 56.6 per cent. Nineteen of the 22 who stopped showed two-thirds or more healing, while only 11 of the 18 who merely "cut down," showed that much healing. His statistical study, .pub lished by the technical jour nal, "The Lancet," was of much medical interest because it dramatized the difficulties involved in statistical interpretation. Federal Funds Suggested For Election Campaigns Hayden Lake, Idaho (IP) The dilemma of financing political campaigns could be solved by adopting federal fi nancing of national election campaigns of the major po litical parties, Sen., Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.), told an audience here Saturday. Neuberger, speaking at a noon luncheon of the first an nual national conference on political parties, said, "true elimination of conflicts of in terest will remain an elusive goal until an effective meth od is adopted to free public officials from being virtual prisoners of the huge funds needed during campaigns." The Oregon senator de scribed in detail legislation he has proposed . in the Sen ate to have the federal treas ury underwrite certain elec tion costs as "necessary." He said this would be done by entitling major party can didates in federal elections to federal financial " support based on a formula of 20 cents for each voter in the district; by offering a tax credit of up to $10 to every taxpayer for a political contribution to the candidate of his choice; and by matching-fund grants to states for voters' pamphlets. H Rowan Gaither Jr., chairman of the trustee for the Ford foundation who was instru mental in preparation of the Gaither report, says "the Am erican people and their rep resentatives in government must understand," the impor tance of science and tech nology to the nation's future. He outlined the need for government financing to make possible important re search for "our nation's needs." Gaither addressed 1200 per sons attending the 21st an nual alumni seminar at Cali fornia Institute of Technolo- He . told his audience that "American science and tech nology which once our peo ple thought to be unquestion ably unsurpassed, has not yet attained the strength and vi ability necessary to guaran tee our welfare and survival in a prolonged period of in ternational crisis." Gaither, who headed a committee which drew up a report that stirred consider able controversy regarding the nation's preparedness said there was evidence "that whatever awareness has de veloped under the impact of recent events may already be receding in the light of our own successful orbiting of satellites." Gaither said "the Commun ist world and the Free world are two dynamic systems at work, moving at different rates of speed, and driving ultimately toward ideological goals which are diametrically opposed. He went on to say that with greater public awareness and knowledge of the role of science and technology "there will come more enlightened governmental policies at all levels that will make federal and state funds more accept able in the future than many people now think they are . . "Politics aside," said Gaith er, "the simple fact is that some facilities now required for the vigorous, far-ranging and even costlier research that our nation needs can be financed only by govern-, ment." Russia Steals Trade Fair Attention With Exhibits Osaka, Japan (IP) Rus sia stole the show at the re cent opening of the fifth in ternational trade fair to be held in Japan. The USSR pavilion was big ger, better and more spec tacular than those of the Un ited States and the 22 other nations participating. The Russian exhibits, with a model of Sputnik II and the dog Laika inside it, were the center of conversation. "Beep beep," music played while a huge globe showed the paths of the two Russian Sputniks around it. While the Russian radios, TV sets and textiles were in ferior to American brands the Russians showed more of all types of goods in their first display in the Japanese trade fair. Walter Williams, undersec retary of the U. S. Depart ment of Commerce, said the United States "considered putting a model of the Ex plorer satellite in the U. S. exhibits, but , it was decided not to make a propaganda contest out of this ti;ade fair." I SERVICES FOR VICTIMS Belsen, Germany (IP!
