4 Med Treasure flame JWr Own Price for Wrongly Captioned Stamp So far as is known, the gov ernment destroyed all the stamps it had printed with an erroneous caption in the Pan ama Pacific Exposition series. But it didn't destroy at least three of the original die impressions of the stamp, and therefore it is quite possible that some of the stamps them selves escaped. If so, the value will be tremendous for whoever finds one. The stamp is the two-cent, carmine colored item in the series commemorating the ex position at San Francisco in 1915. The error is in naming the picture that appears on the stamp of the authorized issue. The correct name of the pic ture is the Gatun Locks, of the Panama Canal. The mistake consisted of naming the picture as the "Miguel Locks." When government officials discovered the error, they not only destroyed the large stock of stamps already printed but the plates as well. They then altered the die so it would have the correct inscription and rushed the job of print ing the proper replacements Despite their precautions, however, at least three of the die proofs of the miscaptioned stamp were not destroyed. Since the value of one of those proofs today, as given in Scott's Specialized Cata- louge of U.S. stamps, is $1500, it is evident that the value of one of the stamps printed from the die with the erron eous caption would be even greater. Recognition of such a stamp would be easy enough. The only difference between it and the authorized issue is in the caption itself.' 23 Machinery TfOcfors F OTCSAlTETord tractorTVery good condition. CURRIER IVES DATES CLEVELAND'S CAMPAIGN Tom removed a picture from the wall. "This is a cam pain print that Currier & Ives put out in 1888, when Grover Cleveland ran for his second term as President. As you'll recall, he was defeated. Take a look at it." The picture, captioned "John Bull and His Friend Cleveland," was a typical, campain message. On one side was John Bull against a back ground of smoking factories and busy workmen. Opposite stood Grover Cleveland against a background of smokeless factory chimneys and idle men. In small type below the caption, John Bull was say ing, "Mr. Cleveland, keep my factories going if the rest of mankind starve." The Ameri can President's answer read, "I am proud of your approval, Mr. Bull, and am doing my best to serve you." Someone said that he didn't get the connection, that Cleve land was advocating free trade and the high tariff party beat him in 1888. "Sure," Tom agreed. "And Cleveland staged a comeback in 1892 and won another four years. But the point I wish to make is this: Tom said he had . bought the print at an auction for $50. "I undersand that $35 is the usual price for it," he said, "but I got carried away somewhat." MARK TWAIN BOOKS FIRST SOLD BY SUBSCRIPTION Ted is in the premium busi ness. He supplies premiums to firms that use them as busi ness stimulators whether it be selling magazine subscrip tons or increasing the sales of a breakfast food. As a result he had a wide variety of interests, but I didrv't expect it to be so wide that I would find him laugh ing over a copy of Mark Twain's "Roughing It." "It's what the buyer wrote on the title page," Ted replied "And what tickles me so is that Mark Twain was in ef fect selling his books as a premium deal. The buyer of this one took the book as means of getting chances on a house and lot." Ted was quite right. I had never relized it before, but as it said on the title page, the book was "issued by subscrip tion only and was not for sale in book stores." In other words, back in 1872, the American Publishing Co., of Hartford, Conn., was using book agents exclusively, and they used everything they could think of. As for the book itself, it looked as if it might be a first edition. I suggested the possibility. "That's the first thing I thought of," Ted said, "and I didn't buy it until I was sure not for $20." How he found it was a first was by checking it against a reference work in the library, He found that the "y" in the first word of Chapter I should be perfect in subsequent is sues with the 1872 date it is broken and since his copy had a perfect "y", he knew he had a first issue of the first edition. And he also looked up the price records and found that $20 was about half what the book should bring in view of its good condition.
