H MAIL TRIBUNE, Mtdforrf, Ore., Sunday, April 13, 1951 16-Foot Snow Pack Seen In Crater Lake Park Area Almost 46 feet of snow has fallen at Crater Lake park headquarters the past season, building up a 16-foot snow pack, according to Supt. Tom Williams. The snow is "money in the bank" for farmers, loggers and, sportsmen as stored water for next summer's use, Williams said. Unoccupied building are humps in the snow field, al though they are uncovered by bulldozers two or three times each winter. The two snow survey courses are gauged monthly by park rangers in coopera tion with the Soil Conserva tion Service. On March 29, the course at Annie Spring had an average snow depth of 137 inches and contained 54.1 inches of water, 1.3 la ches above the long time aver age. At park headquarters, on the same date, 174 inches of mow contained 72.7 inches of water, 8.3 inches above nor mal. A record snow pack 'of 18 feet was measured in March, 1952. Winter Still Hers Although spring 'is arriv ing in the valleys, winter is still in progress at Crater Lake, and will be for some time. April averages over 47 Inches of snowfall and has produced as much as 143 in ches (1948). May usually sees about 24 inches of new snow but in 1933 experienced 103 Inches. The average winter snow fall is 618 inches, or about 52 feet. The record high, in 1932 1933, was 879 inches, or more than 73 ft. Conversely, the next year produced only 382 inches, or less than 32 feet. Visitors to the park at this season drove a road that is a 15 to 20 ft. deep channel through the snow. The road is open to the rim of Crater Lake where the lake may be viewed in its winter glory. Light meals, hot drinks and curios are available at the r:' on week ends. Boy Scouts Pack 14 Cub scouts of pack 14's den number two recently made a field trip to the Star Ranger station in Applegate.
