Into Big National Press Club Br LOUIS CASSELS United Press Correspondent Washington W This is the 50th anniversary of a $320 investment that pro duced a unique American in stitution. The investment was made in the spring of 1908 by 32 Washington news papermen who chipped in S10 each to found the National Press Club. The club began life in two rented rooms above a jewelry store. Today it owns the tall est office building in down town Washington, the Nation al Press Euilding, and occu pies handsome quarters on its top floor. The original purpose of the Press Club was to provide a place where working news papermen could get together to eat, drink and talk shop. It still serves that purpose, but it is now far more than a social club. It has become a world-famous forum before which leaders of America and other nations speak, and in which correspondents from 20 countries exchange ideas and ask questions. The club now has 4,600 NOTICE OF SCHOOL MEETING Notice is hereby given to the legal voters of school district No. 2 of Jackson County, State of Oregon, that a SCHOOL MEETING of the said district will be held at the School House on the 28th day of April, 1953 at 8:00 o'clock p.m., for the purpose of discussing the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1958 and ending June 30, 1959, herein after set forth. BUDGET FISCAL YEAR 1958-1959 due s-paying members, of whom 1,000 are active news papermen. The rest are for mer reporters or "news sources." Included in this category are loyal members Harry S. Truman and Herbert Hoover. Some Presidents Presidents Woodrow Wilson, i William Howard Taft, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Franklin D. Roosevelt were members during their lifetimes. President Eisenhower has never enrolled, but has dis played an interest in the club's activities and was in vited to the golden anniver sary banquet which the club will hold Saturday night. Despite the prestige it has acquired over the years, and the role it plays in national affairs, the club has never taken itself quite as seriously as some politicians take it. Women are barred from membership in the club, and even when squired by hus bands or boy friends, they are restricted to certain areas of the club, such as the east lounge. They may enter the main dining room for dinner, but not for lunch. No female foot is permitted inside the oak-paneled men's bar, which is famed as the most fertile spawning ground of rumors in Washington, or in the card room where a well-nigh per petual poker game is in prog ress. The Traditions Other traditions of the club reflect the peculiar foibles of newspapermen, including their fervent distrust of one another's credit and their irr verence toward authority. No member is allowed to charge anything at any time and no one may cash a check larger than S20. Officers of the club are expected to wear their mantles lightly. For example: The "General Advisory Com mittee' composed of past pres idents is enjoined by custom never to meet except in ex treme emergency and "never to offer advice under any circumstances." A government statement said Peron's Dominican visa has been extended indefinite ly because Argentine govern ment interference has made it impossible for him to get permission to go elsewhere. from the 1,000 offices in the National Press Building must go to retire the debt on the building. . The club gets noth ing from its valuable real estate at the corner of 14th and F sts., two blocks from the White House, except free occupancy 'of its own 13th floor quarters. But when the debt is retired, the club will begin to reap a nice income from rents. Already it looks like a very good $320 investment. If it weren't for this bit of stubborness it might well be the smooth-voiced Bennett in stead of Elvis Presley cast as the star of "King Creole." The script was known as "A Stone for Danny Fisher" when Bennet was suggested as the lead. "But you'll never be a mat inee idol unless you have some plastic surgery on your nose," the 31-year-old singer was told. And Bennett, normally easy-going, anxious to please, shook his head (and nose) at the plan with words to the effect that Hollywood produc ers often can't see beyond their own you-know-what. Involved Discussion The discussion about facial features in general and Ben nett's nose in particular took place minutes after he'd com pleted recording three songs for a new Columbia album. The recording seassion was squeezed between club dates. Now appearing at Holly wood's Cocoanut Grove, Ben nett leaves Thursday for Reno, Nev., for another sing ing engagement. A favorite of the club cir cuit ("After seven years I'm in a position where I just play the top night clubs") and a solid money-maker for Co lumbia Records, Bennett nev ertheless would drop both ac tivities' immediately if the right "Eli Kazan type of act ing role came along." A student of the American Theatre Wing, Bennett one day hopes to have a serious acting part in a "quality" film. Looks for Something Else "They'll let me keep my own nose if it's one of those 'walk in and sing a couple of songs, Tony,' kind of movies," he explained. "But that's not what I'm looking for." Bennett's major ambition, however, is to be a "concert" entertainer 15 years from now. "Danny Kaye and Victor Borge have this type of show today," he said, "and this is my ultimate goal. Right now I'm in a training period, one which will one day make me ready to entertain for two and a half hours in a concert hall." Bennett, meanwhile, is busy 40 weeks of "the year with cafe dates in Las Vegas, Nev., Florida, New York, Chicago, Reno and Los Angeles.
