4 Phoenix Halts Effort To Slice Speed Limit Phoenix The Phoenix city I city recorder to write the Na council Monday night decided tional Advertising company, to temporarily drop any fur-1 Vancouver, Wash., stating its ther efforts to lower the speed limit to 30 miles an hour on the South Pacific highway as it intersects with Fifth st. In answer to a letter from the Phoenix city council, the state speed control commis sion wrote it considered the present speed limit of 43 miles an hour "reasonable and prudent." The letter, dat ed March 8, "was signed by Ed B. Crandall, commission secretary. The council had requested the lower speed limit because of the school crossing at that other street and road matters, City Recorder Frances Steveson read a letter from the county court stating a survey and cost estimate is being made on straightening out the 'S" curve on First st. and extending the street to meet Colver rd. across the railroad tracks. Survey Now Made County Commissioner Ches ter Wendt said the court has written another letter today saying the survey and esti mate have been made. The county will include the im provement of this farm to market road in its new budg et, Wendt said. The county court, in its letter, also in structed the Phoenix officials to obtain the necessary rights of way and obtain a clearance from the state public utilities commission to extend the street across the railroad tracks. The city recorder was in structed also to write the state highway commission re questing an investigation of the safety problem. During other action, the city council refused the re quest of Col. A. H. Dudley, proprietor of the Southern Oregon Livestock auction yards, requesting the city ex tend its water line to his prop erty. Mayor Vincent Claflin said the city would if he ap plied for annexation to the city. The city council direct ed a letter be written him telling of the decision. The city recorder is to explain also that it would cost him approximately $400 to extend the line to him. By coming into the city it would cost only about S80. However, the city has a firm policy against extending any of its utilities or services outside the city limits because of difficulties in the past, Councilman Ar thur McKintosh said. To Install Fire Plugs The city council also ap proved a motion directing Fire Chief Leo Furry and Water Superintendent Irving Hanscom decide where to in stall three fireplugs. Costs, including installation, are es timated at $150 each. The city recorder reported $1200 is left in the water department supply fund to cover this. The fire chief and city water su perintendent pointed out that plugs are needed on Fifth st. between Rose and Pine sts., on Church st. between Second and Fourth sts., and on Sec ond st. by the elementary school. A city ordinance requiring all residents within the city limits to hook onto the mu nicipal sewer system was passed Monday night. Dead line for the hookup is July 1. After that a maximum fine and sentence of $100 andor 50 days in jail will be en forced against all violators. The city council also ap proved a motion directing the city recorder to buy up all outstanding warrants totaling $56,972.54 with the $57,800 from sale of the sewer bonds. Training Course Planned For Dogs Ashland The Ashland YMCA will hold a nine-week dog training course starting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, accord ing to Bill Warren, Ashland YMCA secretary. Wally Kirsher, well known dog trainer and handler of Ashland area will be the instructor, Tomorrow night's course will be an orientation session. During the following Thurs day night classes owners and their dogs will be taught to work together. This is the only known course in this area for dogs of any breed or mixture of breeds, Warren said. The course will cover com mands to heel, sit, stay, lie down ' and to- come when called. Additional skills will be taught as class progression warrants. "He needs someone who can really discover him," Curtiz was told by producer Hal Wal lis who was then in the initial phase of planning Presley's fi nal pre-Army movie, "King Creole." "Elvis needs to be discover ed as much as Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield do," Cur tiz' said in an attempt to end the conversation. But he fi nally did agree to see the side burn king's dramatic test. "After the first few lines Elvis spoke," Curtiz said, "I began to sit up and take no tice." "Instead of a gyrating rock-and-roller, I was watching a natural, un-actory actor, un derplaying his role because he knew none of the tricks of the trade." Discovered Many Star Curtiz, credited with the 'discovery' of such persons as Doris Day, Errol Flynn, John Garfield, Eleanor Parker and Ann Blyth, was convinced. And that was the beginning of what Curtiz said was an at tempt to give Elvis what he most wants- respect. Cities Expanding Juvenile Programs Chicago Iff) Most of the largest cities in the United States have expanded their programs to fight juvenile de linquency. The American Municipal as sociation reported that the cities found an increase in crime by the young and then decided to do something about it. As association survey show ed that all the covered cities with populations over 250, 000 and the majority of small er communities have police juvenile bureaus.
