For More Members

safety Council have renewed
their membership during the
first few days of the member
ship campaign, according to
C. D. Larson, campaign chair
man. Those receiving statements
were urged to return their
'Sno-Trip' Planned

Ashland The YMCA of
Ashland will sponsor a special
"Sno-Trip" to Crater Lake
this Saturday, YMCA officials
said.
Transportation will be
furnished by the Ashland
YMCA. Bill Warren, YMCA
secretary will be driver and
trip leader.
All junior high and high
school skiers, bob-sledders and
snow-ballers are invited to
register either at the Medford
or Ashland YMCA's. Tickets
are limited. They cover round
trip transportation and insur
ance. Plans include a visit to
Rim Village. Each party mem
ber s h j u 1 d bring warm
clothes and his own skis or
sleds if desired. A sack lunch
or money to purchase refresh
ments was suggested also. The
Ashland YMCA bus will leave
Ashland at 7:30 a.m., stop at
Talent, Phoenix and the Med
ford YMCA. It -will return to
Ashland at 5:00 p.m.

possible, Larson said, in or
der that certificates may be
prepared and presented at the
membership meeting at 12
noon, Friday, April 11.
In addition to present mem
bers, applications are being
mailed this week to every seg
ment of the community popu
lation in order to make the
Medford Safety Council com
pletely representative, Larson
said.
Those wishing to join who
do not receive an application
this week, may secure one by
writing to the executive sec
retary at P.O. Box 614, Med
ford, he concluded.
While receiving the. certifi
cate of membership for the
City of Medford recently,
Mayor John Snider commend
ed the Safety Council for it
varied activities in commun
ity, safety which it sponsors.
He also encouraged all who
have an interest in the safety
prpgrams being conducted in
the area to join with this citi-
zen safety organization in , a
concerted drive to reduce the
acpident toll.
ACCEPTS MEMBERSHIP Mayor John
Snider accepts the city of Medford's certifi
cate of membership in the Medford Safety
Council from Council President B. B. Big
ham. Mayor Snider also received the first
membership card issued for the 1958-59
year. Individual membership cards will be
issued to everyone who joins during the
April campaign.
172 Cases Said Cleared This Month, 48 Pending
A total of 162 complaints
were reported to the Jackson
county sheriffs office during
March,- according to the
monthly report made Tuesday
by Chief Deputy Joseph Walsh
of the criminal division.
The office disposed of 172
cases during the month and
has 48 pending, Walsh report
ed. Some of the cleared cases
were reported during previous
months.
Walsh said complaints made
to the sheriff's department in
March, 1958, were 42 more
than the 130 received in
March,; 1957. Only 86 were

risen markedly in recent
years.
Of the total reported for
last month, 88 were criminal
complaints, including 51
major and 37 miscellaneous of
fenses. Thirty were cleared
and six unfounded, making a
41 per cent clearance.
Major offenses included one
criminal homicide, two aggra
vated assault, 20 burglaries,
10 grand - larceny, 15 petty
larceny and two larceny of
autos. .
A total of 74 non-criminal
cases were reported during
March; 78 were closed and 48
are pending. Thirty-six war
rants were issued and 16 ar
rests made. .
. Twenty persons were lodged
in the county jail by sheriff's
officers, including 13 charged
with felonies. State police
jailed 23; Medford police, 12;
Jacksonville police, 2; United
States marshal, two; and one
each from Phoenix, Central
Point and Eugene.

Saudi Arabia To Curb Jordan Aid
Amman, Jordan (IP) Saudi
Arabian Crown Prince Faisal
has informed Jordan his gov
ernment cannot continue its
annual $15,400,000 dollar sub
sidy to Jordan, authoritative
sources said today.
The subsidy was set up in
the spring of 1956 when Brit
ain cut off its $30 million
annual aid to Jordan after
King Hussein ousted British
Maj. Gen. John Glubb as com
mander of the Arab Legion.
In addition to dropping the
subsidy, Saudi Arabaia was
expected to withdraw the
5,000 to 7,000 troops now sta
tioned in Jordan.
The gap between the Saudi
aid and the money formerly
paid by Britain was largely
made up last year by U. S.
economic aid.
QUADRUPLETS BORN

ruplets were born Tuesday
night to a 19-year-old house
wife, but one of the infants,
a girl, died shortly after de
livery. The mother, Mrs.
Gladys McGraw, and her
three sons were in good health

A small exhibit of handi
craft articles from Mexico has
been arranged at the Medford
Public Library, headquarters
of the Jackson County Li
brary, together with a selec
tion of books on the arts, the
antiquities, the history, the
customs, and the people of our
neighboring nation, said Head
Librarian Helen Webster.
- Among the articles display
ed are two posters made by
children of the village," Ajijic,
and sold for them in their pub
lic library. The proceeds are
used to purchase additional
art supplies for the youngsters
and to help support the li
brary. These, like the other
articles on ' exhibit, were
brought from Mexico by Miss
Webster upon her return from
a recent vacation on Mexico's
west coast. They are displayed
as an observance of Pan
American Day, April 14.
More than half a million
Americans visit Mexico each
year, she said. Judging from
the demand at the Jackson
county library for books on
the south-of-the-border coun
try, this community contrib
utes its share of tourists.
