Diary of a RUSH TO PENNEY'S FOR THE BIG- Bird Watcher ff Sunday, March 30 The only interesting natural history observation that I made today came at an unusual time. I made it while I was preaching (for I am a minister). Our church has clear glass windows and the members often enjoy looking out at the oak trees. This time as I was preaching at the first service I saw a big jack rabbit hopping around the flowers and bushes. I said nothing about it, but was even more surprised when I saw it again at the second service. Could this have been the Easter bunny looking the place over in preparation for the egg hunt a week later? When we first moved here we saw rabbits quite often but seldom do now that it has built up more. Monday, March 31 J. H. and the two ladies in our family antl I had an excel lent birding trip. In fact we recorded an even 50 species in less than four hours. We checked some nearby ponds, then went out Antelope rd. to the intersection with the road to Brownsboro. From Brownsboro we followed down Little Butte creek to the Agate rd. bridge. There we took a short hike through the woods along the creek and found trilliums and Dutchman's breeches in bloom. We also saw several birds, including both kinds of kinglets and a brown creeper.! . Our best birding, though, was closer to town. The pond at the corner of Springbrook and Roberts rds. had large . numbers of swallows flying over it. We found three species, tree, violet green and cliff. The tree swallows have been here for, a month; J. H. had already seen the violet green which were more than due; but the cliff swallows were an excep tionally early arrival. According to "The Birds of Oregon" by Gabrielson and Jewett, the earliest record for them is April 8. Fortunately all four of us had good views of them and could confirm the identification. Right in town at the corner of Main and Groveland, where there is a vacant lot, we found two chipping sparrows with a flock of other birds. J ' 1 Tuesday, April 1 I had a phone call about a big white bird that sits on a little hilltop near the lower end of the string of Hoover lakes and not far from the Crater Lake highway. I went out to take a look at it. We found it was a whistling swan, and sure enough there it was sitting on the top of the little hill. The man who had called me took us out to see it. We waited be hind while he went around it and flushed it over toward us. It headed straight for us, then veered and settled on a little pond. The man told us that it came along in December and at first went around with his domestic geese. Later the geese chased it away and it began sitting alone on the hill. It often seems to happen that one or more wild birds will identify themselves with a domestic flock during the winter and then Ihey often become quite tame. There is a cackling goose on the pond oh Springbrook rd. that has also been there since December. A white fronted goose was on one of those ponds for a couple of winters. It will be interesting to see whether this swan and this goose fly north with others of their kind In the course of the next month or so. Wednesday, April 2 I saw a robin carrying nesting material. Later in the day I had the interesting experience of following a gull in my car as it flew directly over town. I was coming over the hill from Spring st. on Valley View and then along Grove land to our place. I saw it first from Spring st. and last as it flew over our house and on beyond. But I can't put it on my home list because I couldn't tell what species it was. It was flying directly south, the opposite direction to the way you expect birds to be going now. Friday, April 4 Several more people have asked me or told me about evening grosbeaks. As noted before there have been more in the valley this year than any year since we have been here. And they are still with us. Their large beaks, yellow under parts and big white wing patches make them quite noticeable. I also had another call about that blackbird with a white head, but I had no more time to go and look for it. This time ft was seen along Stewart near Hamilton T.M. Gambling is not permitted In St. Louis, but you can cross the Mississippi river in to Illinois and gamble. The trip ig only 20 minutes.
