Cotton, construe tion mechanic third class m the Seabees. recently returned to the Rogue valley area from the South Pole for a 13-day leave. Cotton and his wife. Patri cia, live at 302 B St., Phoenix. While at the South Pole he was stationed at the Navy's McMurdo Sound base as a ve hicle mechanic. He said he spent the summer season in the base, which is just the reverse seasons of the northern hemisphere. Cot ton arrived at the airbase just after Christmas and left on March 11. Although traveling by ship between Christ Church, Ne Zealand, and Ant- artica. he said he was trans- ported by plane back to the United State on April 3. Summer Weather Summer weather in Ant arctica is as high as 30 above and as low as 20 below, he explained. Most of the cold weather is of the dry-cold type and is not as noticeable as cold weather in the Rogue valley, he said. Cotton said he worked out doors in shirt sleeves some of the time because of the warm sun. He noted a restric tion that no man could leave the base alone because of sud den snowstorms which can ap pear. During the winter, now in progress, he said the re quirement is three men in a party. He said he attended a several-month preparation school at Davisville, R. I. before leav ing for the South Pole last year. Most work at the school is for personal conditioning he added. Special Diet A special diet is fed the men while stationed at the pole. He said while a normal ration is 3,000 calories per day, the normal at the pole is 6,000 per day to make the necessary body fat for heat. He said the men are served excellent food while stationed there. Cotton said he worked 12 hoyr shifts during his duty 15 Qualify After Firs! Aid Course - Fifteen persons qualified to give first aid in a Red Cross First Aid class under the in struction of Fred Moreno of Rogue River recently, accord ing to Leroy Williams, chair man of first aid for the local Red Cross chapter. Members of the class were employees of the Ideal Cement company, Gold Hill, and they qualified March 31. Taking the class were H. R. Bennett. John J. Cannon, Frank Carter, Kendal J. Du fur, Albert T. Finke, Leonard Gascon, Cleo Gilchrist, Clar' ence M. Huntley, Earl F. Moore, Neal P. Smith, J. R. Ritter, L. R. Smith, Frank A. Sutcliffe, Robert C. Vincent and Ralph W. Hixson. Orders 32 tour and often would find the sun shining when he got off work at midnight. Most forms of activities were movies, a" workout at the gym or one of several hobby facilities pro vided. About 90 men out of the 200 stationed at the sound will winter-over he said. Cotton said he is seriously consider ing asking for duty in Antarc tica next year but could not say what his wife thinks about the idea. Five People Die As Greyhound Hits Head-on Info Car ' Creswell (W A north bound Greyhound bus collided head-on with a car on High way 226 just south of here Friday night killing five per sons in the car and injuring nine bus passengers. The victims were identified as John Bradigans, about 22, Cottage Grove; Donald T. Mathews, 16, Cottage Grove; Thomas Riley Huckegy, 22, Lindsay, Okla.; Peggy Jean Works, 16, Anlauf, and Dean na Gayle Oleson, 15, Curtin. Nine bus passengers were taken to Sacred Heart hospital in Eugene where three were admitted for "observation of injuries" and six were treated and released. State police said the auto was heading south and ap parently crossed the highway in front of the bus, which was traveling about 51 miles per hour when the .collision oc curred. A relief bus from Eugene took the uninjured passengers to Eugene shortly after the crash. The car, a 1951 Ford sedan, was registered to H o 1 1 i s Mathews, Cottage Grove. Six Appearances Made in Circuit Court Last Week Leroy E. Beebe, 31, Phoe nix, was given a three-year I suspended sentence jn the Ore gon state penitentiary when he appeared in circuit court Thursday on charges of burg lary not in a dwelling. He was charged with break ing into Cooks Reception beer parlor Feb.. 3. Elmer Ray Wallace, Grants Pass, received a suspended sentence in the county jail for one year and eight months on charges of burglary not in a dwelling. He was charged with breaking into Evans Val ley Lockers Feb. 4. Attorney Ben Lombard was appointed to defend Albert Hubert Laessig, Mountain View, Alaska. He- is charged with obtaining money under false pretenses. Sentenced lo Jail Stanley Carlton Schoen was sentenced to one year in the county jail on charges of lar ceny from a person. He was charged with taking a bill fold, glasses and ball-point pen and $4 cash from Earl Elton Jones on Jan. 7. The case of Daniel Vernon Ferrier, Ashland, was con tinued pending arraignment for transfer to another state. He had appeared on charges of violating the conditions of his parole and contributing to the deliquency of a minor Jeannette Marshall was ap pointed an attorney for Anita Lorraine Weeks, route 1, Med ford, who is charged with for gery. Binford of the State Water Resources board has asked to be relieved as chair man when the board meets April 21 at La Grande. Binford made the request in a letter to fellow board members, saying that when he took on the job he urged that chairmen serve only one year. Binford is a Portland bus inessman. The board was cre ated by the 1957 State Legislature. Human Chain Fails To Save Driver Huntington, Ore. (IP) A human chain, speedly formed after a car was seen to plunge into the Burnt river near here "early Saturday failed to reach the driver, perched atop his vehicle, before he was swept away down the swift river toward its confluence with the even swifter Snake river. State police said the car was owned by Douglas Kemp about 52, of Hood River, a mechanic working for Morri-son-Knudsen company on a railroad bridge under conT struction near here, and they presumed he was the driver who was swept downriver.
