14 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Sunday, April 6, 1958 loss Wimidlow Stoiroed y X. "i ' tit'" 'f S Mr -a CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS The use of symbols in stained glass windows has been used for many centuries. An example of the use of these Christian symbols in Medford is found in two of the windows at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran church, 1020 East Main st. Pieces of glass in rich, vibrant colors of blue, yellow and red form both of these windows, one which is shown here. On the left a figure knocks at the door, as Jesus states in the Bible, while on the right the Shepherd carries a lamb, depicting the Lamb of God. "' mmvmm g HE IS RISEN One of two large stained glass windows at First Presbyterian church depicts the Angels at the Tomb. Many of the window subjects in the Medford churches hav ing stained glass windows are from the final week of Jesus Christ's life among men a week that Christians regard as the most momentous in history. Four of the 17 stained glass windows at the church are found in the assistant pastor's study and represent the parable of the Sower. Several Medford Churches Depict Various Scenes Windows of stained glass have been a part of Christian art since the early A. D. 500s, although the earliest authentic examples in existence now date from the 12 century in France. Several Medford churches have fine examples of stained glass windows of various sizes depicting various Biblical scenes or Christian symbols. In early times, colors were used in the window glass as symbols of spiritual qualities. For example, red was the symbol of love, valor, and martyrdom while blue repre sented wisdom, loyalty, truth, and Heaven itself. Yellow or gold stood for goodness and spiritual achievement, and so on through the whole range of pure color. Use Disappeared Although this use of sym bolism disappeared in later centuries it reappeared in the early 1900s. During the past 50 years it has regained its place as art in both America and Europe. The majority of the stained glass windows in the Medford churches portray Biblical scenes during Christ's last week on earth. Another favor ite Subject is the Nativity scene showing the Virgin Mary, Joseph, and sometimes the wise men. The cost of elaborate stained glass windows have prevented their use " in some of the churches, but colored glass may be found in many of these churches in the city. Some of the churches have acquired their stained glass windows through memorial funds. Trained Craftsmen A group of trained crafts men is necessary to make a Biblical picture on paper into a window of stained glass. Once the picture for the window is decided on an orig inal sketch is made in scale of the size desired. From this, a person translates the sketch into what is know as a "car toon" which is a full sized work drawing. This "cartoon" is used by the colorist, from which he works with his knowledge of color symbolism. Then the cutter expresses this color in the selection of glass es designated by the colorist. A painter adds the tracing and matting, and after the firing, the glazier takes the many pieces and by lead cames of varying widths puts the glass es together to form the fin ished pattern. Stained glass windows will add reverence to the Easter services this morning attend ed by Medford worshipers. Talks Called Off On Pilot Strike Los Angeles (IP) Bargain ing talks aimed at ending the lengthy pilots' strike against Western airlines have been called off for a third time by the National Mediation Board. NMB Member Robert O. Boyd halted the stalemated discussions Friday night after rejection by the striking Air Line Pilots association of a pair of proposals to settle the bitterly-contested "third-man" jet crew issue. The 263 pilots involved in the dispute walked off their jobs Feb. 21. Operations of the airline, which serves cit ies in most Western states as well as Mexico and Canada, have been grounded since that time. The latest talks, which last ed for 12 days, were stalled over the question of whether a third pilot would be re quired to operate the com pany's new prop-jet Electra aircraft, slated to go into ser vice next year. A code of conduct for Mc Loughlin Junior High school students and their parents has been adopted by both groups. The . code includes such teen age activities, as home enter taining, dating outside the home, going steady, and prob lems to be settled in individu al families. 'According to the-.code, par ents . should encourage home entertaining for the teenager. Invitations to these functions should state the type of event, appropriate dress, and time of start and close of the party. The code states that the guests should leave at the designated time and adds that parents should be home during the party but not "in the middle of the activities." The party should be well planned and considerate guests will follow the plans of the host, the code indicates. If special conditions or speci fic rules of conduct are to be observed during the party they should be explained by the student host, the code says. If guests do not follow the rules the parents should be called. The code comments that party crashing usually ruins the party for both host and invited guests and crash ers should not be admitted. Rules Stressed Stressed in dating outside the home is that students and parents should inform each other of their whereabouts while away from home arid of any change in plans. Parents should know, it continues, where the student is going as well as with whom, at what time, and type of event. They should particularly know about the transportation to be used. ' Although the time that the students should return home may vary1 due to individual health, academic standing, type of event, and past record, the hours for both boys and girls are included in the code. For dating on school nights, ninth grade girls should re turn home by 10 p.m.; eighth grade girls, 9:30 p.m. and seventh grade girls, 9 p.m. On Friday and Saturday dates these times change to 11:30 p.m. for ninth and eighth grade girls and to 11 p.m. for the seventh grade girls. These times are one half hour later for boys of the same class to give them time to return to their home after walking their date home. The code states' that the home of the students should be offered and encouraged as a possible place for dating. Under the heading of going steady the code points out that except in a few instances, go ing steady in McLoushlin Junior High school does not mean what most parents think it means. Dating Defined The types of "going steady" are divided into three categor ies, it says. The first is "girl you like best" style which lasts a month to six weeks. The students wear each others chain, telephone several times a week, and are invited to home parties together. The second type is "show and party steady" which some times lasts slightly longer than the other type. In this case the boy calls for the girl on Friday or Saturday to escort her to the show, school or YMCA affair. The code states that the majority of the junior high school students do not go "steady." The seventh grade students who do, fall into the "best girl" category while eighth and ninth grad ers who do follow either of the two types. The third type, "dating steady," usually lasts for one school year arid the couple attends affairs together. They usually meet each other be fore school and during noon hour unless other activities prevent such a meeting. It was reported that not more than 15 or 20 couples actually go steady at the school. Problems to be settled in the individual family, include such items as allowances, clothes, discipline, and the use of the telephone. 3,124 Museum Visitors Listed Jacksonville A total of 3,124 persons visited the Jack sonville museum last month, Miss Mary Hanley, curator, has announced.
