MARTIN Written for lh United Press Today, millions of Chris tians in every part of the world will participate in Holy Communion just as Jesus Christ did on a Thursday evening almost two thousand years ago. The simple rite with bread and wine will have different meanings for different Chris tians. But to all Christians it is an act of obedience to Jesus' command: "Do this in remembrance of Me." Historically, the communion service can be dated hundreds of years before that evening in the upper room, when Jesus and His disciples shared the Last Supper. It goes back to Moses and his command for the feast of the passover, to commemorate each year the deliverance of the Israel ites from Egypt. Not for Gaiety So it was that evening in Jerusalem. In almost every home people gathered to ob serve' the feast of the Pass over. But for Jesus it was not an occasion of gaiety. He knew that his death was near. It was an occasion of such deep consequence for Him that none of His com panions could then compre hend the true meaning of His words. Jesus took two of the sym bols of Passover, bread and wine, and gave them a signifi cant new interpretation. He was celebrating not just the freedom of the Israelites from domination by the Egyp tians. He was heralding the victory of God over both sin and death. Jesus knew that people in sin and that included the whole human race were in bondS2- They were slaves of their lower selves. The mission of Jesus was the re lease of mankind from that bondage. The only way all this could be changed was for life to be sacrificed- Jesus Christ made that sacrifice, taking upon Himself mankind's sins, dy ing on a cross at the hands of sin. If the scene had ended there, it would have been only another incident in his tory. But Jesus was raised from the dead and through this divine act was the victor over sin and death itself. The purpose of the contest was to relate classroom activities to real-life situations. Talk on Reorganization Set in Jacksonville Jacksonville Glenn Smith of Ruch, a member of the county reorganization board, will discuss reorganization as it concerns the Jacksonville school at a meeting at 8 o'clock tomorrow night at the high i school gymnasium. Smith will illustrate his dis cussion with county maps and figures to represent compara tive wealth of various districts in the county, according to Eloyd Wyatt, chairman of the local board. Extends Freedom God extends to us all this freedom from the bondage of sin. First, we need faith in Him. Then we must forsake every known sin, seek His forgiveness, and . decide to walk with Him. This is a simple formula, but it requires an act of will which is the heart of surrender to God. When once we have sur rendered our will to God's will, there is both joy and power, and love acts on the highest level. The sacrament of Holy Communion is an act of com memorating the true signifi cance of Christ's death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. It reminds us, as nothing else can, of Cal vary and of the empty tomb. We come faithfully to the table, as Christians have done down through the centuries, to remember his precious deed. Grimm, noted stock market analyst, has written the. following dispatch as a guest contributor for Elmer C. Walzer's "Financial Gossip" while Walzer is on vacation. By ELDON A. GRIMM Written for United Presi New York (IF) "Short sellers" in the stock market have increased considerably over the past few months. Normally these "shorts" are professional traders who sell a stock which they don't own with the hope of buying it back later on at . a lower price. Lately, however, the general public has gotten into the act too, due to head line news about the business recession. Selling short is a hazardous occupation. The person who engages in it may guess wrong and have to repurchase the stock at a higher price. There's an old saying in Wall Street that "he who sells what isn't his'n must buy it back or go to prison." Highest Level Since 1931 Last month the "short in terest" on the New York Stock Exchange jumped to 4,460,660 shares, the highest level since the bitter Depres sion days of 1931. Over the past two months, the short in terest has risen 1,627,920 shares, a gain of 57 per cent and the steepest climb on rec ord. At the American Stock Exchange, the short position has zoomed to an all - time peak. Are these traders and ama teur "bears" going to make money or are they going to lose their shirts? They ' are defying the overworked slo gan about "don't sell Ameri ca short!" Biggest short position is in U.S. Steel, with 315,652 shares short, or triple the 103,291 total of two months ago. The bears have no personal grudge against this "blue chip" en terprise. But their contention 'is that "Big Steel," which has been split six-foivone since 1946, still appears'vhigh, with steel industry operations down to a new low of 48 per cent of capacity. Other Major Gains Some other major gains in short positions over the past two months have been in Bethlehem Steel, Chrysler, Fruehauf Trailer, Anaconda, Reynolds Metals and Alumi num Co. of America. One of the toughest battles between the bears and the bulls has been taking place in Polaroid, of "Land" cam era fame. Shorts in Polaroid skyrocketed to 122,967 shares vs. 54,755 in mid-January. The short sellers argue that the "glamorous" Polaroid at about $62 a share seem "too high.", They point out that the stock sold as low as $1.50 back in 1950, and that 1957 earnings were only $1.44 a share and may not exceed $2 for 1958. Polaroid's annual dividend is a mere 20 cents. Even so, the Polaroid shorts, like guard house lawyers in the Army, might be partially wrong, because the .company hopes to perfect a color pro cess. Lorillard Shorts Way Up Likewise, many shorts have been fighting the rise in the earnings of Lorillard, which currently boasts a best-selling filter cigarette. Lorillard shorts In two months have gone up to 58,560 shares from 12,823. Lorillard stock has trippled, topping 54 vs. last year's low of 15ss. Shorts in Lukehs Steel con tend that Lukens' recent rec ord profits are temporary in nature, and the short position in that stock amounts to 69, 000 shares, or 7 per cent of the total issue. Short sellers actually per form a public service. They help to stabilize fluctuations in the market.
