Tornado, Caveman Series Among Key Cage Contests In Fight for A- i Berths Southern Oregon confer nee basketball series open this evening on Medford and Central Point courts. Medford high will be host to Grants Pass at Hed rick Junior high gym and Crater will entertain Klam alh Falls. GP and Medford Tie at Grants Pass on Sat urday while KF will be at Crater again. Varsity games are set for 8:15 p.m. after 6:30 p.m. prelims. However, there will will be no prelim at Central Point tonight. Medford and Grants Pass are fighting for second 'place in the conference and A-l tourney berth. Crater is still in the running for., the spot but is three games back of Grants Pass and its hopes are rather dim. Klam ath has cinched the league title, has been assured of a trip to the Eugene tourney and is playing its last games of the regular season this week end. By UNITED PRESS Fifteen A-l high school bas ketball teams remain in con tention for nine remaining berths in the annual state tournament next month at Eugene but the field may be reduced this week end. . Several key games are scheduled including a series between The Dalles and Hermiston, another between Medford and Grants Pass, a game between South Eugene and Springfield and the Jeff erson - Roosevelt contest in Portland. Seven teams are "in" for the McArthur court tourna ment. They are Grant of Port land, Astoria, Beaverton, North Salem, Bend, Pendle ton and Klamath Falls. Grants Pass could gain a tourney berth with two wins over Medford. If they split or Medford wins two the is sue goes into next week. The Dalles and Hermiston open a two-out-of-three game series in Hermiston tonight for a tournament spot. Red-hot Midwest Roosevelt would quafily for the tournament with a win over. Jefferson while the lat ter needs to win to keep alive its chances for Portland's ' third tournament spot. Frank lin also is a contender. The red-hot Midwest league sees South Eugene meeting Springfield tonight. Spring field could win one tourney berth with a victory. South Eugene, with Charlie War ren back in the fold, is 6-3 while Springfield is 7-2, Rose burg 5-3 meets North Bend and Marshfield this week end. North Bend is 4-4 and Marsh field 3-5. The loop has two tourney berths. St. Helens and McMinn ville, tied for first place in the TYV league, clash tonight. Tigard, just behind, also hopes for one of the two tour ney berths from the loop, and plays Oregon City tonight. Corvallis hopes to join North Salem as a Valley league tourney representative and could do so with a win over Lebanon tonight. In class A-2, two of eight berths have been filled. Dallas and Stayton have qualified. MedfordS&Tribune ipaDmnr Bears Launch Tough Home Tussle Stand hf GENE BRYANT United Press Sports Writer The California Bears, with a fast-closing Oregon . State squad breathing down their necks, open up a tough three game home stand tonight against UCLA as the hot Pa cific Coast conference basket ball race enters its next-to-last week end of competition. The surprising Bears will take on a dangerous Idaho team Saturday night then Oregon next Friday, needing a sweep to insure their sec ond straight PCC champion ship and a berth in the NCAA playoffs two weeks hence. As of now, California leads the field with a 11-2 mark, followed by Oregon State (9-3) and UCLA (9-4). Bruins Still Ineligible The Bruins, with a mathe matical chance to finish in first place, are ineligible for the western regionals and the PCC title, however, because of conference penalties. OSC, only a game-and-a-half behind Cal, will have a much easier schedule than the Bears in the last days of con ference play. The Beavers will host slumping Southern California Saturday night, with a pair of games against weak Washington State and a single contest against Idaho slated for next week. A four-game sweep by; the Beavers and a single loss by California would cause a two way deadlock for first place. A single OSC loss, however, would put the Bears in the enviable position of needing only two victories in their last three games to take the championship. The Bears have taken their last eight games at home. Stanford Hosts Idaho In addition to the Cal UCLA contest tonight, Wash ington will host the last-place Washington State Cougars, USC will travel to Oregon and Idaho will go against Stanford's upset specialists at Palo Alto. Oregon State is idle. Over in the West Coast Athletic conference where the University of San Fran cisco has already sewed up another championship the powerful Dons will go after their eighteenth straight when they host San Jose State. Coach Phil Woolpert's quintet edged St. Mary's, 49 47, last Tuesday to inch the title and a berth in the NCAA playoffs. Other WCAC games will pit St. Mary's against Loyola and Santa Clara against Pep perdine. Chieftains Need Win In the important game in the Northwest, Seattle uni versity's slumping Chieftains will be out to score an im pressive victory over Pacific Lutheran in the hope of land ing a berth in the Western Regionals. The Elgin Baylor-led Chief tains were upset by a strong Idaho State, another squad anxious for a trip to the NCAA playoffs, last Satur day after escaping with a nar row one-point victory over Montana State earlier in the week. . Nevada's Far Western con ference co - champions will visit Montana State and San Diego State will host Long Beach State in other games tonight. k - ,- , t. i -y ; j?$ , v, jrdP. ...... , ' s . . Linfield has the edge going into the final two days of the 1958 schedule but Willamette and Lewis and Clark still nurse some title hopes and the race conceivably could end up in a three-way tie. Linfield, 9-4, has a home-and-home series with Lewis and Clark, 7-6. Two wins by the Pioneers would tie them with the Wildcats. Willam ette, 9-5, has just one game left, a home contest against Pacific in which it is heavily games of second place in the Eastern Division by beating Syracuse, 97-91. favored Willamette could tie Lin field for the crown by win ning if Linfield should lose just one of its two games to Lewis and Clark. But if Pa cific should upset the Bear cats, Lewis and Clark could move into a three-way tie for first by a double win over Lirtfield. The Willamette - P a c i f i c game is tonight in Salem. Linfield meets Lewis and Clark in Portland tonight and at McMinnville S a tu r d a y night. The Northwest conference champion will enter the NCAA Pacific Coast regional small college tournament.
