Medina, who in a reminiscent mood recently remarked: "W hat got me through that trial was pray er." . No one needed to ask what he meant by "that trial." 'I am disturbed by our failure to make an all out ef fort in filling the Democratic ticket throughout the state," Epps said. "Nothing we can do for the cause of good gov-! ernment is more important than giving voters first class Democratic candidates." County chairmen, he claimed, had a responsibility for persuading outstanding Democrats to file. Deadline L for filing is March 7. ', 1 It was one of the longest and most important criminal trials in American history. And it certainly was one, of the odd balls of all trials. As a report er associated with long sieges of it, I don't mind refreshing your memory. The defense declared at the start that the trial was a frame-up, motivated by "the great white' father in Wash ington" H. S. Truman, who, they claimed, deliberately created a climate of opinion against them. Stalling and Worse Only 15 days after the trial began, .the judge accused the Communist attorneys of con certed stalling. Nusbaum, manager of the Medford office of the So cial Security administration, spoke to the Medford Lions club at its regular meeting Tuesday, Feb. 25. Nusbaum discussed the ef fect the 1956 amendments to the social security law have had on the old-age and sur vivors ., insurance program, both nationally and locally, with particular emphasis on the amendments providing for disability insurance pay ments, lowering of the age re quirement for women to 62, coverage of various profes sional groups and changes in the status of various farm owners and operators. V He pointed out that during 1957 the Medford office for warded 1,878 applications for retirement and survivors benefits and 304 applications for disability benefits. "" ' President Louie Ruhl pre sided . and Eston Humphrey was program chairman. over, he accused them of try ing to break his health; Winter turned to spring and spring to summer. The words flowed on. I have a mental picture of the judge, sitting there, his sad face (with the Adolphe Menjou mustache) cupped in his hands heaving a sigh now and, then: ."I tell you to desist and you keep right on; I warn you now, there is a day of reckoning coming." Often his brow clouded and his face reddened but his voice kept soft. He almost seemed to wear a halo of commanding initials, NRE no"; reversible erron Ordinari ly , a f un-lovmg, gregarious man, he turned himself into a hermit, determined the trial would' not wear him down. He went ou onto on week ends, and then only with his wife, to dinner. He saved all his energy for the courtroom. No Ten Talker V The six defense attorneys kept the words streaming, and the Judge was no terse talker himself. Once when he was explaining he didn't quite know what path Attorney Richard Gladstein, of San Franciscoi was leading into, Gladstein shouted: "J u d g e, I'm trying to lead you into "the paths of righteousness! Not all the wordage was in side. Often out in Foley Square some 400 faithful marched around, chanting loud respects to Medina and, among others, the Attorney General. ("Tom Clark, listen to me you can't jail democ racy!"). -...'' The end came in mid-Octo ber. The 11 leaders were led away after being found guilty of conspiring to organize a party of persons who advocate violent overthrow of the gov ernment. "Now," said the Judge in a deadly voice, "for some un finished business." He held the defense lawyers in con tempt and sentenced them to terms of four to six months all except McCabe. He got only 30 days: Never underesti mate the power of poetry. WeightSr pleasures Week To Be Observed Salem Here's one week, weights and measures, that won't get any extra observ ance in Oregon because the state's inspectors will be too busy making their routine ftp spections "of weights and measures.
