The President's pilot and Air Force aide, Col. William Draper of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, is now on the West Coast studying new tech niques in jet passenger air craft. In the absence of Draper, the President's plane, the Columbine, is being flown by Maj. William Thomas who normally rides as second of ficer or co-pilot. Delivers Ship The Columbine is a deluxe Air Force plane. The plane and its crew are assigned ex clusively to the President. The President sometimes lends the craft to other offic ials or guests. President Tru man likewise had a special Air Force plane assigned to him. The Columbine was last used to fly the President and Mrs. Eisenhower to Phoenix, Ariz. The .First Lady has de cided to remain at the Main Chance Farm of Elizabeth Arden outside Phoenix for about two weeks and there is reason to believe at the White House that after Mrs. Eisen hower completes her rest in Arizona, the President . will fly back to Phoenix to pick up his wife and return her to Washington. - The normal flight time for the Columbine to Phoenix and return is about 14 hours. . If the cost of this operation was charged to a commercial air line it would be about $4,800 per round trip. The Air Force is reluctant to detail the cost of operating the Columbine. However, Air Force accountants who would not like to be identified say that each hour of flying time costs about $348 for fuel, oil and maintenance. The salaries of the large crew of course go on whether the plane is flying or not. Some of the Columbine's Laurel, Hedges May Need Spraying r Laurel bushes and hedges and pyracantha should be checked for San Joe scale, Clifford B. Cordy, county hor ticulturalist, reminded resi dents today. On laurel the leaves will fall off, he explained, if the plant is infected. A check of the plants leaves will deter mine whether scale is present. Little spots on the leaves and on the wood are sure signs, he said. The bushes should be spray ed with a mixture of oil and lime sulphur. He added that if a large section of the hedge needed spraying it was best to hire it done and use hand sprayers on smaller areas. Ross heads the OSC ex tension service fire preven tion program. Sixteen children under 5 burned to death in Oregon homes in 1956, the latest year reported by the Oregon fire marshal department. Ross said newspapers are current ly reporting the usual num bers of "shocking tragedies in which children die without having a chance." Oregon fire records for the period 1942 to 1952 show the fire death rate is about 12 per 100,000 population for children under 5 years of age. National reports further point up the fire danger faced by small children. Insurance records for 1954 55 reveal that fires accounted for one-fifth of all accidental deaths at ages 1 to, 4 years. It places fire next to motor ve hicle accidents as a killer of small children. It is not my cup of tears, but I can understand why some viewers enjoy it it's a little like peering through a 21-inch keyhole every Wed nesday. But unlike ordinary keyhole peering, there's no sense of guilt involved be cause emcee Ralph Edwards keeps assuring viewers that it's all being done for good reasons uplift for the viewer and catharsis and loot for the victim. "This Is Your Life" feeds upon the corpses of lives past and Edwards makes the most of his electronic feast, salivat ing verbally as he sticks his knife and fork into the car cass and starts carving. Wednesday . night's show was a typical example. The target was a reticent, sweet faced woman, Martha Malloy Smith of Watertown, Mass. Like most of Edwards' vic tims she was lured into posi tion by well-intentioned rela tives and friends. Didn't you hear what I just said?" Mrs. Smith was led on stage and the parade started: Her big brother, her little brother, her mother, her Brother-in-law, her 13-year-old son and a congest of as sociates who had once floated around the 'fringes of her life. Mrs. Smith's husband wasn't there and that, of course, was Edwards' twister and the rea son for the show. An airman, her husband was one of those killed in July, 1945, when an Army plane plowed into the Empire State Building. Blinks Back Tears Edwards milked their court ship while Mrs. Smith blink ed back tears and he milked Smith's death while she sat in a state of semi-coma. "Ah," said Edwards in sepulchral tones, "Time has eased the pain for all of you who shared it on that day . . . Sorrow, yes, but no despair ..." And Mrs. Smith wept a lit tle. And a hand frome one of her relatives touched her shoulder to steady her. Well, this may be entertain ment, but I doubt it. It seems to me a terrible invasion of privacy, a cheap lure-in to sell a few lipsticks. It's all very well for Ed wards to exploit those who court publicity show busi ness folk, politicians and oth er headline eaters but it seems to me that in stretching and picking and pulling at the fabric of just nice plain people, he is guilty of some thing very basic a violation, of decency and ordinary good manners.
