Robertson Regains Scoring Leadership By FRANK LITSKY UniUd Press Sport Writer Utah, Tennessee Tech and Miami U. (Ohio) marched in to post-season basketball tournaments today but still had to play second fiddle to Oscar Robertson of Cincin nati, who regained the na tional scoring lead. Utah (16-6) became the seventh team named for the 12-team National Invitation tournament March 13-22 at New York. Tennessee Tech (17-8) beat Morehead State, 66-63, in overtime to win the Ohio Valley conference title a."d an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. Mi ami (15-7) also made the grade for the NCAA competition with an 82-73 victory over Marshall that wrapped up its second straight Mid-American conference championship. Scores 50 Points But the individual glory went to Robertson, the Cin cinnati sophomore who scor ed 50 points in a 91-73 tri umph over St. Louis. The six-foot-five youngster from Indianapolis thus grabbed back the scoring lead from Elgin Baylor of Seattle with an average of 34.43 points per game to Baylor's 33.76. Roberton's spree against St. Louis set a Cincinnati field house record and also broke Missouri Valley conference season records for total points and field goals. What's more, he played an outstanding de fensive game, nabbing 23 re bounds and holding Jack Nim litz, who had been averaging 18.5 points per game, to nine points. The victory assured Cin cinnati of a tie for the con ference title, which also means a spot in the NCAA tournament. Cincinnati (12-1) can clinch matters by beating Wichita Saturday or can back in if Bradley (10-2) loses eith er to Tulsa Saturday or Wich ita Monday. - Kenny Sid well's 1 points led Tennessee Tech to victory over Morehead, which suffer ed its first home court loss in 35 games. However, Tech may decline the tournament trip, because three key play ers are playing their fourth varsity season and thus must it out the 24-team NCAA tourney. I sports Daily's U-Drive Medford Airport Wildlife Group Says Tags Prove Deer Decimated Yreka, Calif. Statements that 75 per cent of the east ern Siskiyou county deer herd were wiped out by the 1956 either-sex deer hunt have been proved conclusively. President Charles Bull of the Northern Counties Wild life Conservation association made this announcement to day. Forty-two hunters had worked until 3 o clock Satur day checking the 1956 tags. A similar check of 1957 tags was made the previous week end. Full Report Promised Bull promised a full report on the comparisons would be available by next week. De tailed reports will be issued to outdoor sports editors, sportsmen's groups and any one else interested, he said. "This report," Bull said "will fully bear out our state ments that at least 75 per cent of the eastern Siskiyou herds were wiped out by the 1956 either-sex hunts." Taking part in the count were members of the Weed Gun club and Dunsmuir Rod and Gun club. Members of the Klamath River sportsmen also turned out in force, Bull said. The reports, Bull said, will list the deer kill by sex. area and, in the case of bucks, by horn points. Roses Should Be Pruned, Agent Says Rose bushes should be pruned now, according to Clifford B. Cordy, county horticulturalist. Although new shoots are appearing at the top of the bushes, he said, it is all right to cut off this new growth. All of the old wood should be cut out of the bushes, he said, and then sprayed with a neutral copper. If the roses have mildew a lime - sulphur material should be used on the bush es, tie stressed tnat tne two sprays should not be mixed on the same bushes. Mick Wins Salary Tiff St. Petersburg, Fla. TP) Mickey Mantle won his sal ary tussle with the New York Yankees when he signed his 1958 contract for an estimated $75,000. Mantle, who has been hold ing out for that sum, walked into the hotel room of Lee MacPhail, director of player personnel, at 9:30 a.m. (EST) Two minutes later, he was signed and was en route to the ball park for the club's first official practice session. Mantle, who today signed for just S5.000 less than the club paid Babe Ruth, received about $60,000 last year. He won the American, league's most valuable player award in 1957 for the second straight year. Mantle had a .365 average and hit 34 home runs last season. Clinton Charley High for Shoot Fifteen shooters gathered at the Phoenix Community building Tuesday for the joint weekly smallbore shoot of the Medford and Phoenix Rifle clubs. Participating for the first time this season was Jim Ol son from Medford. . High scores were: Clinton Charley 389. Lew Conger 386, Harry Heidenreich 383 and Charles Taylor 382. Margaret Taylor of the Cen tral Point Junior club won the novelty match by accu mulating four aces out of her five shots at the Roker hand target. Some of the new members either are naturally talented pistol shooters or practice in secret. Paul Rutter led all Wednesday with 268, amazing for a beginner, and was tops in the rapid fire. Marines May Take College Education Four years of consecutive education in civilian colleges and universities have been made available to qualified enlisted Marines, according tq the commandant of the Ma rine corps. The program is designed to create well trained personnel to meet the demands of the scientific age, according to Capt. W. H. Bates, officer in charge of recruiting for Ore gon. Each county selects a girl and boy to represent that county at the state conference, Glenn Klein, county agent for boys, said. At the state meeting two girls and two boys will be selected to represent Oregon at the 4-H club conference in Washington, D.C., in June. Trinity River, Glen Canyon Jobs Voted Money Washington (W The! House has voted $20 million in new appropriations for the Trinity river project in Cali fornia and the Glen Canyon project in Utah and Colorado. It added the money in ap proving a $2,857,882,907 sup plemental appropriation bill. Several Republicans from Southern California, includ ing Reps. Craig Hosmer, Bob Wilson and James B. Utt, vot ed against the supplemental appropriation. Favored by Hillings ' But Rep. Patrick J. Hillings (R-Calif.), who is running for attorney general in Cali fornia, voted for it. The House action climaxed a long dispute over supple mental funds for the two pro jects. Rep. Clarence Cannon (D Mo.), chairman of the Appro priations Committee, recently criticized the Interior Depart ment for its scheduling of water on the two projects. The committee said that Congress should not appro priate new money for them, j It said the department should keep them going with funds ! it is not using on other pro- j jects. j $10 Million for Trinity The Appropriations Com- j mittee then voted S10 million j for continued work on the ! Trinity river project and S10 ' million for the Glen canyon j project. I However, the , committee ! specified the money was to i be taken from other Interior j Department funds. It was not counted as a new appropriation. But this provision was elim inated from the bill. Rep. William A. Dawson (R-Utah) then introduced" an amend ment providing for an out right appropriation of $20 million for the two projects. Then the house voted 200 to 184 in favor of the new appropriation.
