Often what these Dr. Alvarez persons are suffering from is a loss of their old comfortable sense of balance, or a feeling that any minute they might fall Perhaps they stagger a bit as Orr Leaves for National Meeting Of Commission Eugene Orr, Medford mer chant and national executive committeeman of the National Rehabilitation commission left Saturday to attend a meeting in Washington, D.C., of about 700 state, district and post service officers of the Ameri can Legion Feb. 25 through 28. Orr said he will present at the annual rehabilitation com mission meeting plans to have a veterans hospital establish ed at Camp White. At a previ ous meeting of rehabilitation officers in Arizona in January a resolution was approved to add hospital facilities to all veterans domiciliaries in the United States which did not have them. Conference Highlight Highlights of the four-day conference include an address by national commander John S. Gleason at the annual banquet Thursday evening and remarks by the admin istrator of veterans affairs, Sumner G. Whittier, at the Friday morning session. Chairman Robert M. Mc- Curdy of Pasadena, Calif., will officially open the conference at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Gleason is scheduled to present the Legion's legislative program to the House Veterans Affairs committee. Other items on the agenda include a panel orr medical and hospital services, pre sentation of veterans and de pendents' claims, appeals and survivor benefits; insurance, rehabilitation in community service, and VA voluntary service program discussion, a special report on social se curity and a panel on voca tional rehabilitation. Lumber Market Said Still on Slow Basis Lumber marketing was at a 'virtual standstill" last week because of bad weather conditions in the east, accord ing to Random Lengths, Eu gene market news letter. But during the past two weeks, according tp Crow's lumber market news service, prices of green and dry Doug las fir edged upward, while prices on western Pine spe cies dropped, with the indus try average off 5 cents. Plywood prices were soft, with ' negotiations ranging around $66 after a $2 fall last week, Random Lengths said. Both services said the greatest activity was in the lower grades of fir dimension, which drew the best demand, but that buying pressure which previously pushed prices up S3 to $4 was off. Often it takes an expert examination to tell what sort of dizziness a man has. An expert wants to know where the disease is: in the ear or the nerve to the ear, or the brain. Young people and especially young people with destructive disease in their ears are likely to have true vertigo with a sense of spinning around, and often nausea and vomiting. When this comes in sudden episodes of vertigo associated with loss of hearing in at least one ear, the person probably has Men iere's disease a disease due.j apparently to changes in the membranes lining the tiny cavities in the balancing mechanism of the ear. Older persons who get a loss of their proper sense of balance, together, perhaps, with character changes, and ear noises, but no loss of hear ing, are likely to be suffering from arteriosclerosis of the tiny arteries of the brain and from what I call little strokes. Mechanisms Used I recently read about the first Vertigo Clinic in this country located in Temple University Medical School, in Philadelphia. In this clinic persons can come to have their hearing and balancing mechanisms tested. Neurolo gists will try to rule out brain tumors and tumors on the nerve that run from the ear to the brain. Some patients will be studied by allergists. Many will be twirled around in a special Barany chair to see how they respond to stim uli given to their balancing mechanism. Warm water will be injected against the ear drum to see if this produces special symptoms. In a few cases electroencephalograms will be made to rule out epi lepsy and localized disease of the brain. I welcome the setting up of this clinic. As every good nose and throat specialist knows, thousands of persons now being treated for Meniere's disease do not have it. This can be determined in a few minutes by finding that the ears are normal and the hear ing is good. Unfortunately, with all our tests, I fear there is a large percentage of cases of dizzi ness or giddiness of poor sense of balance in which no exact diagnosis can be made. We doctors can only suspect that there are arteriosclerotic changes in the brain.
