I want to work my way through college. Mr. L. M. What a half baked, Horatio Alger idea! Ronald M. I am a 17-year- old boy making plans for starting college in the fall. I am very eager to be inde pendent and I want to work my way through. This would mean I would have to go to a school that is somewhat less expensive than the ones my parents want for me. My parents keep telling me how they want to give me the best of everything and that I should appreciate it. CHRISTENSEN Chairman, Jackson County Public Welfare Commission. brothers. I want to make my own way in the world. I have figured out how I can meet all my expenses by working over the summers and doing part-time jobs dur ing the school year but it would have to be at the cheaper school. e Mr. L. M. Ronald has got ten some half-baked Horatio Alger idea into his head. He seems to think it's a real big deal to work your way through college. Well, it happens I did just that and I know what it means. It means never, getting enough rest, not having time for sports and other extra curricular activities and not having enough time for study. I know I could have done much better at school and perhaps gone further in my career if I didn't have to work. Ronald has had the good fortune to be accepted in a top-ranking school and I am fortunate enough to be able to send him. Why should he be so stubborn in this hare brained notion? The Council: Perhaps Mr. L. M. would be a little more patient with his son if he realized the boy probably wants to emulate him. Pos sibly Ronald idealizes the father who worked his way through college and became successful in his career and he needs to test himself against this hero-figure. In this case, Mr. L. M.'s crude disparagement of Ron ald's idea probably has a re verse effect. Ronald inevit ably feels that his father is pointing out his poor judge ment and his inadequacy to meet the challenge he has set himself. This makes it still more important that he prove himself. Ronald's wish to be self supporting is commendable and 'deserves attention. It is not necessary or desirable to crush his ambitions with terms like "half-baked" and "harebrained." An effort should be made to meet him at least halfway. If Mr. L. M. feels that the top-ranking school is really so much more desirable than Ronald's choice, he should suggest that the boy plan to meet part of his expenses there. He could offer to give Ronald the rest of the money as a loan, to be paid off when he starts to work. He should point out that many students meet their expenses with loans from the college. Above all, it is important that Ronald go to the college of his choice in a happy frame of l.nd. It may be frustrating to his parents to have him spurn the advantages they want to give him, but those advantages would not have a desirable effect if they were forced down Ronald's throat. (Copyright 1958. General Features Corp.) Neuberger Backs Umatilla's Stand Pendleton (IB Uma tilla County Court Judge D. R. Cook said today he has re ceived support from Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D Ore.) in the county's battle with the Washington Depart ment of Highways over a pro posed route for the Ellens-burg-Pendleton Federal inter state highway. Neuberger, in a letter to Judge Cook, said it would be "wasteful" to build a new Co lumbia river bridge at Blalock island when Umatilla county's new bridge already is aval able a few miles upstream. A highway route proposed by Washington state highway officials would ultimately by pass the Umatilla bridge now being paid off by tolls. CLEAN SWEEP-DOWN While a milk box starts to float away in the foreground, neighbors pitch in to keep flood waters from entering the home of Dick Wheeler in Mill Valley. London (W Prime Min ister Harold Macmillan won an unofficial vote of confi dence Thursday night for his efforts to set up a summit conference with adequate ad vance preparation. Macmillan won the vote 308 to 242 after a two-day for eign policy debate in the House of Commons. The gov ernment avoided an official confidence test by taking the vote on a technical motion to adjourn. Debate showed the Con servative government and the Labor opposition united in de manding new East-West sum mit talks. Labor attacked the government for "dragging its heels" in not agreeing to the meeting without further hag gling with Moscow over an agenda. (IPI The Little Rock School board today sought court permission to suspend integration at Central High school because "defiance" by "a small group" was hampering efforts of both teachers and students. In a petition filed Thursday in Federal District Court, the board asked the court to stay the execution of its decree issued last year calling for gradual integration of the high school. It also asked the court to define the term "de liberate speed" as applied to school integration. Since nine Negro students were enrolled at Central High last fall under protec tion of federal paratroops and federalized National Guards men a series of racial inci dents occurred, culminating in the expulsion last week of one of the nine, Minnie Jean Brown. The board and school su perintendent Virgil T.
