SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. February 20, 195k Quotes From the News Monte Carlo OP Dr. David M. Roberts, of his 83-year-old patient. Sir Winston Churchill: "Ha is not going io die. The only reason for concern is his age." Washington "J" Sen. A. S. Mike Monroney (D-Okla.), entering into the congressional record a United Press story about a special citation of merit to United Features Service j Columnist Thomas L. Stokes: i "This latest recognition of one of our finest newspaper- i men is not being given him for one stroke of genius, or even j for that lucky break plus competency which often brings j awards ... but for his unvarying high standards through ' a 37-year career ai a Washington reporter." Montpelier, Vt. Mrs. Ella Ann Divoll, who will be 105 i years old this year: "I guess I'm not bad enough to go to the devil or quite j good enough for the Lord to want me yet." j Little Rock, Ark. Gov. Orval Faubus, on the expulsion j of one of Central High school's nine Negro students from the city's school system, of which he was critical: I "She should have been allowed to go back to Horace j Mann school." (A Negro high school). TV Critic 'Fractured' by Victor Borge Performance By WILLIAM EWALD United Press Correspondent New York W Victor Borge, a gentleman who plays t..e piano and the buffoon, dropped into the cloistered halls of CBS-TV Wednesday night and uncloistered them. I must say at the start that Borge fractures me. If I have - any bones to pick (careful, boy, those are fractured : bones), it would be to com ; plain that there wasn't ; enough Borge. I think some - network should set "aside a ' day to the man. i Enjoys Own Work I suppose one of the reasons why I enjoy Borge so thoroughly is because he seems to enjoy his own work so thoroughly. He operates with a kind of maniacal gusto, . a rapturous detachment from -sense and reason. His world is nonsense, a nonsense com- pounded of equal parts of ; gloat and bliss and clouds, all ; of it smothered with a coat ;lng of imbecilic relish. "I have two - and - a - half : brothers." Borge said at one : point during the evening. "Three half - brothers who : make one-and-a-half and one regular one who makes it two-and-a-half. Incidentally, ; one of them is married to a very lovely girl, very wealthy : she owns a string of wish ing wells." Or: "I wish to thank my : mother and father who made this show possible. And my iive children who .made it necessary." Working on a Sandwich I knew everything would turn put all right from the very start when Borge ap peared, surrounded by the i gentlemen of the orchestra and a sea of Lawrence Welk bubbles. The orchestra was working on "The Liechten steiner Polka" and Borge was working on a peanut butter sandwich and the piano. "This piano was made by Steinway and Sons this afternoon," he explained later. "Normally a piano has 88 keys, but this one has 89 because one of the sons is a little off." He then went into a com mercial for his auto sponsor and volunteered a recent pic ture of his own model. It turned out to be a mound of snow. "The bad thing about it, of course," shrugged j Borge, "is that my wife is still in it." And so it went. Borge slashed up some scores of Schubert and Strauss and Shostakovich and Debussy and announced he was com posing a typical Tin Pan Alley hit. He opened two tiny plastic boxes for inspection. "They contain the first and last notes Mozart wrote," he declared solemnly. Bambi Linn and Rod Alex ander danced and Doretta Morrow sang and a 12-year-1 old Abbott Lee Ruskm, play ed the piano. Borge played some gushy Kachmaninorr and a medley of Gershwin, the latter punctured by re mote shots of Broadway and I Central Park South. Strangely enough, the re motes showed the streets of Manhattan deserted. I guess everybody was in watching TV and I suspect they were watching Borge.
