EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Husband or Wife Allowed to File Joint or Separate Income Tax Return v Editor's not: Following is the mnd of five rlitpatrhrs giving detailed explanation about filling out and filing the 1358 income tax forms. The series was written es pecially for United Press by Rus sell c. Harrington, commissioner of internal revenue. By RUSSELL C. HARRINGTON Commissioner of Internal Revenue "Written for United Press Washington W Being married may save you money on your income tax. The government allows you and your wife or husband to file a joint return instead of two separate returns. Very of ten you pay less tax this way but not always. The only sure way to tell which method costs less is to figure the tax both ways. Even if you filed separately last year you may file jointly for your 1957 income. It's up to you. Whether you file jointly or separately you use the same forms. Generally, if a cou ple's combined income was less than 55,000 either Form 1040 or the short card Form 1040A may be used. If the in come to be reported was $5,000 or more, Form 1040 is required. Forbidden in Some Cases In some situations joint fil ing is forbidden. These cases are relatively infrequent but should be remembered. They are: if you were divorced or legally separated on or before Dec. 31, 1957; if you are mar ried to a non-citizen who does not live in this country; if TRUCKS OF MANY TALENTS -how a more efficient job in bringing you good Behind your phone calls roll a host of trucks. One tax item which affects couples more often than it af fects individuals is buying or selling a house. Pay Tax on Profit As a general rule, if you sell your home or any other personal property, such as stocks or bonds, you must pay a tax on the profit you make. There is an exception which applies in certain cases where you sell your residence. If you sold your home dur ing 1957 for a higher price than you paid in buying it and making permanent im provements on it you need not pay tax on the profit if you buy another home with in 12 months and pay as much or more for the new one as you got for the one you sold. If you sold your home and built a new one instead of buying an existing house- you have 18 months instead of 12. That is, you must move in within 18 months. If you buy or build a new house for less than you sold the old one, you must pay tax on part, or all, of the profit from selling the old. If you owned the old house for more than six months, the tax may be at lower rates. Report all of this in detail on a separate tax form, called Schedule D, and summarize it on page 3 of Form 1040. Later 1 will discuss deduct ing interest payments on the mortgage on your house. ' Provisional President Pe dro E. Aramburu is a regular army general whose path to the Argentine "white house" was paved by a revolution and a coup de-etat. Aramburu has been de nounced as a "tyrant" by the Peronists, but in fact he has been bending over backward to insure a free election. Neither he nor any member of the Cabinet through which he has governed Argentina since 1955 is a candidate in next Sunday's election. A score of Peronist political weeklies, on open sale on Buenos Aires newsstands, reg ularly assail the Aramburu "dictatorship." Every party contesting the election has been given free radio time to state its case, and the larger parties have been able to get free tele vision time as well. Argentines have seen noth ing like it since 1928, when Gen. Jose F. Uriburu over threw Radical President Hip- olito Irigoyen. No election here since that time has been entirely free of restraint.
