Monday. February 1. 195 . . . . the LARGEST purchaser of Oregon agricultural products announces a tremendous SPUD-O-RAMA! Family Council TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE - Edward A. We should have a family now. Myra A. He resent my career. Edward A. I am 32 and my wife is 30. We have been married for six years. Natur ally, I want a family, but my wife doesn't seem at all in clined in that direction. Myra has an interesting job and has had a lot of success at it. Our plan was to save some money during the first three years of our marriage and then to start a family. I am now well able to support a family without Myra s help, but all I can get out of her is "There's time." I don't think I'm being old fashioned or bullying when I say that during the childbear ing years, at least, a woman's place is in the home. If she isn't willing to accept that place, she shouldn't be mar Myra A. For a long time I have had the impression td resents my success in my ca reer and that he is all too eager to put me in my "place" as he sees it. I, am now earning more money than Ed. He has long ago stopped congratulating me when I get a raise. If he loved me he would be as proud of me as I am of him when he is successful at some thing. It isn't that I don't want a child. I really do, but I firmly believe I can have both a family and a career. Right now I want to establish my self so firmly in my career that I can easilycome back after a leave of absence of a few years. I don't think that's being unreasonable or "unwomanly." t The Council: Bitter rivalry, rather than love and creativi ty, certainly seems to have taken over in this marriage. Edward's pronounce m e n t about "a woman's place" ap pears to bear out Myra's ac cusation that he resents her career and is eager to put her out of the picture in the pro fessional world. Myra, how ever, overlooks the fact that Ed's resentment may be an outgrowth of the frustration of his desire to have a family. In any case, Ed's initial de sire for children seems now to have been sidetracked into a desire to put the brakes on Myra's professional ambi tions and Myra is fighting back fiercely, overlooking the fact that she is. letting the best child-bearing arid child raising years pass her. by. Edward and Myra need to reevaluate their marriage and decide what they really want most. Myra is now riding on a. surge of power that grows out of her feeling of accom plishment in her career, but it is likely that deep under neath she feels the lack that Ed is aware of. She should try to understand her own strongest feelings, rather than exhaust her energies in a wasteful battle with her husband. Ed also needs to find his own deepest feelings in the matter and to show in word and deed that his desire for children is genuine and will not be used as a weapon to suppress his ambitious wife (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.)
