McDermott roAM krause, a refinery worker, handles molten lead at his job. One day a bit of the white-hot metal splashed up in his face. Instead of striking him in the eye, it splattered against the lens of his protective goggles, leaving his sight unharmed. "How wonderful to see you again!" he said to his family that night. And he really meant it. Krause is a member of the Wise Owls, who have saved 20,000 eyes their own from injury and possibly blindness. The Wise Owls are industrial workers in plants throughout the United States, Canada, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Each one gained membership by protecting his eyes against accidents. Tody 334,000 Americans are blind and 750,000 others are threatened with blindness. "Half of those now blind could and should have their vision, today," explains Dr. Franklin M. Foote, president of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, "and half of those threatened could be saved." Dr. Foote says that one-fourth of America's 32,000,000 school children need eye care, with serious eye damage possible if they're neglected. Also, sight trouble often causes educational and psychological handicaps, including poor reading, he points out. "Children's eyes are growing and changing with the rest of their young bodies," he explains, "and they need good care. Parents should be encouraged by the fact that most childhood eye defects can easily be corrected with glasses." An alert parent can easily spot signs of eye trouble ; in Johnny or Susie: does he or she blink continually; hold book too near or too far; change distance frequently; shut or cover eye at times; tilt head to one side; often lose the place while reading; have headaches, dizziness, aversion to light? "If so," Dr. Foote says, "take him to a good eye doctor at once. Also, give him a professional eye examination when he starts school, and yearly thereafter." Youngsters are very susceptible to accidents which may cause eye damage, even blindness. Since 100,000 children's eye accidents are predicted for 1958, the Society for the Prevention of Blindness makes these recommendations: parents should not allow children to use such "playthings" as air rifles, bows and arrows, or slingshots; communities should provide adequate facilities for supervised play; and contests should be . held to stimulate safety-consciousness among children. A major handicap to adult vision is glaucoma, which affects 1,000,000 Americans though half of them don't realize it. Glaucoma injures the eyes by building up pressure within the eyeball, and in many cases it causes blindness. But it needn't. Vigilant eye care can prevent it, and treatment can control it. In fact, vigilance must be our watchword in the battle against blindness, the National Society says. That battle can be won if each of us joins the sight-saving crusade. What do you have to do? Just give your own eyes good care, and those of your family; then help others, at work and at play, to protect theirs. 12 Family Weekly, February 16, 19fy
