Recently our children's pet dog was struck by a carload of teen-agers. The youngsters were crying inconsolably as the hot-rod skidded to a stop, backed up, and three leather-jacketed, M duck-tailed boys got out What followed was a revelation tome. Two of them awkwardly tried to comfort trie children. The third gently picked up the puppy from the pavement and cradled it in his arms. They drove to a nearby veterinarian and stayed until the dog, which wasn't hurt badly, was patched up. Then they returned to the scene, amid the happy screams of the children. The children were un kempt, the father drank, and the only housework was done by an 11-year-old girl who cared for her ailing mother and younger brothers and sisters. My first reaction was to drop them, but something in the girl's eyes made me keep trying. I managed to find the father a job and give' Jenny some motherly advice. They improved and after a few years I lost track of them. A few months ago I received an invitation to Jenny's graduation from college! She wrote on it, "I studied to be a social worker, so I could help others as you once helped us." Now I know why I chose my career, and I'm glad I ( did. Bonnie Currier Hall, Marysville, Calif.
