Newspaper Page Text-a Buried Treasure Erasing Cancellation Mark On Stamps an Old Trick Jim sliced open the enve lope. There was no check in it, just a stamp and a letter. He gave the stamp an X-ray glance, laid it aside and read the letter aloud. "Dear Jim." he read. "This stamp might be a bargain, but at $250. I suggest you take another look at the stamp a close one and then revise it drastically down ward." The stamp was a rose-colored, 25-bolivar, issue that I had not seen before. It was not an ornate one, like so many of the South American stamps. Its design consisted only of an oval portrait of Simon Bolivar in the center with the denomination below and the single word ESCUE LAS above. There wasn't even the name of the country on it. "I know 'Escuelas' means schools," I said, "but how come the name of the country isn't on there?" "It's a Venezuelan stamp, GERMAN PROSPERITY BACK TO GOLD COINS "You want $140 for the lat est German gold coin," the customer said, pointing to a sign on the counter. "What's that something put out by the Kaiser?" "Oh, no. The very latest one of those issued last fall." The customer looked no more surprised than I. The coin was a rather strik ing one. On its face was a portrait of Konrad Adenauer. The reverse side of the coin carried a study of a female allegorical figure symbolizing peace. But characteristically enough, the Latin motto be neath the figure put some thing else ahead of it. "Secur itas et Pax 1957", was the way it read. In other words, Security first and then peace. "But $140 for that coin! Have you got any others?" the customer asked. I looked over his shoulder while he examined the vol ume, keeping up a stream of comment. "It looks like a first," he aid. "It has 'Duckworth & Co. at the bottom of the spine Instead of just 'Duckworth as a later issue does. And also this is a cherry-colored cloth binding rather than the light pink of the second issue." He riffled swiftly through the pages, all of which seem ed to be in good order. "Two hundred and fifty-eight of them, just as there ought to be," he said. "But it's been cancelled, apparently by the Banco Nacional, and some smarty eradicated the pen marks almost." The difference in value was enough to justify the ef fort. Uncancelled, the stamp catalogues at $275 as against a top of $60 in used condition. The clerk produced two more. They were both of the same design, but one was smaller and the other larger than the first one that had been shown. "The little one is $70. The big one, $198." The prices seemed unrea sonably high, but not to the clerk. "We're really not asking much of a premium," he said. "It figures out to about $20 per coin." The customer bought one. "Can you beat it," he said, turning to me. "We con quered Germany twice this century. She's beaten, disre membered country. But she's making so much money she's literally coining gold, while our allies, who helped us in the job, are broke." think I'll take it. Do you want it, son?" He handed the book to me. "What's the matter with it?" I asked, opening to the title page and glancing at the date. It had been published in London, in 1900. "Nothing at all," he said. "Except the price. Have you seen that yet?" I hadn't, but it didn't stag ger me. It was $jj0, but for one of the first works of John Galsworthy, and in good con dition, that was not at all un reasonable for a first edition. Indeed, that volume has brought $70 and $80 on three or four occasions in the past years that I know about. "The price really isn't high," the elderly gentleman agreed, "except for a man who buys like me. I'm a speculator, and when I buy, it's got to be a real bargain, a sure-thing speculation." Portland Prowler Killed by Police Portland (IP) A prowler who failed to obey a com mand to halt was shot and killed by police here early Friday. Juvenile division officers Bruce Neelands and Robert Nasby were nearest the scene and drove up to see a man placing merchandise in the rear of a pickup truck! The officers identified themselves and the man start ed to drive away. The entire county is a live stock district wherein it is un lawful for horses to be permitted to run at large. 2. Seventeen districts exist in which it is unlawful for cattle, mules, asses, sheep, swine and goats to be permitted to run at large. 3. Word was received here of the death of Joev Francis, 89, on Sunday, former resident of Hilts and residing in Medford at the time of his death. Sur vivors include his wife, Annie, five children, Mrs. C. C. Cowan, Mrs. Lucille Mc Neil, Joseph and Ernest, all of Medford, Alfred of Prineville, 11 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Burial was in the Henley-Hornbrook cemetery on Wednesday. DEATH OF THE CAT New York P The body of a man was found on the first floor setback of an apartment building Thursday. Police recognized him im mediately as Harry (The Cat) Santiago, an accomplished burglar. On the seventh floor of the building, they found how he died. A fire escape faced the bathroom window of. an apartment on the other side of a four-foot areaway. The windowsill of the bath room was stained with blood. "The Cat" had missed his jump, just barely.
