Fanfare By DICK JEWETT Mail Tribune Sports Editor George Harrington, former manager of Rogue Valley Country club and an Oregon amateur golfing standout, was low amateur in the recent Phoenix Open tournament at Phoenix, Ariz. Harrington is now manager of Arizona Country club. The Open, . which attracted some of the top pros in the business was at Phoenix Gold club and was won by Ken Venturi with a 274. Harrington shot a 285. The ex-Medfordite was low amateur in the Tucson Open several years ago. HEFS TO WATCH When Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon college logr in Iheir Oregon Collegiate conference basketball skirmish on Wednesday, Feb. 19, there may be a sizable delegation of Rogue yalley referees in the bleachers. The officials have postponed their reg ular meeting one night in order that those who wish may take in the collegiate fray. They likely will be pri marily interested in the game but they'll also have a critical eye on the refs for the game. Refereeing will be Joe Zarosinski and Bill Esselstyn, the two have been elected president and vice-president, respectively, of the officials association for next season. to vie with them when they roll in state tourney at Sea side on the week end of March 1 and 2. Mrs. Swope underwent delicate head surgery Wednesday at Sac red Heart hospital. She is the defending state champ ion in Class A all-events, regaining last year the crown she look in 1946 and 1947. The Skeeters team, originally slated to go to Seaside this week end re-, portedly obtained a p o s t ponement with the hope that Mrs. Swope could join them. KALAPUS SHINES Jerry Kalapus, ex-Medford high player, who now swishes the net on the maplecourt for the Pacific university Badg ers, was ineligible for his club's first four games in the Northwest conference but cer tainly has made up for lost time. He has rolled up 140 counters in seven games to lead the circuit in point aver age with 20 per game. Totals available on his first six games show him with 77 re bounds and his average of 12.8 per game was second in that department. Times will be 6:30, 7:45 and 9 p.m. Top team in the Rogue loop will get a first round bye and the sec ond, third and fourth place clubs will be seeded with their first round foes to be deter mined by drawing. May 17 and 24 were set as dates for the southern sub district and District 6 A-2 track meets, respectively, at a recent Rogue league meet ing. Sub - district officials voted to have the meets at Southern Oregon college if that track is available. Rogue league football sea son will open on Sept. 26 with Henley at Eagle Point, Rogue River at Glendale and Illinois Valley at Phoenix. Benny Goodman Going To Brussels New York flPl The King of Swing of the 1930s has agreed to become an atom-age American ambassador of good will. Benny Goodman, his band, trio and sextet, will give series of concerts at the Brus sels World's Fair during the week of May 25-31, under sponsorship of the Westing- house Electric Co., the firm's president, Donald H. McGan non announced Thursday. . . . The great Benny Good man orchestra . . . will add a dimension to the Brussels Fair in which the Soviet Union can not compete," Mc- Gannon said. "American jazz has been shown to be a great force for good will abroad." The bandleader agreed. (IP) Middle weight Rory Calhoun of White Plains, N.Y., has signed to meet Beau Jack of Boston in a 10-round bout at the Rollaway arena next Thurs day. Nine days later, Cal houn, sixth ranked middle weight contender, will meet Randy Sandy of Brooklyn, N.Y., in a 10-round bout in Boston. Bow Meet On Sunday Black Bear Bowmen will be hosts Sunday to a South ern Oregon league archery shoot. The affair will be at Jack sonville Community club. It will begin at 9 a.m. and con tinue through the day. An entry of between 40 and 50 shooters is anticipated. The public is invited to the event, Bowmen said. Hornet- Reserve Quintet- Victor A sharp playing Hedrick Junior high ninth grade re serve basketball quintet romped 53 to 27 yesterday in a scuffle with Phoenix. The Hornets had "quarter margins of 14 to 5, 28 to 10 and 41 to 19. Hook-shooting Stan Dowson paced the club in scoring wnn i poinis. Coach Barney Riggs of Hed rick indicated that some of the Hornets might see more varsity duty on the basis of their performance.
