Nationally Known COLD WAVES HAIRCUTS from only $1.00 PERMANENTS $5.95 up CRATERIAN Beauty Salon 41 S. Central Ph. SP 2-4830 J By GAY PAULEY United Press Correspondent New York IP) The life of the male model hardly matches that of the girl for glamour. But it's a quick way to a hefty bank balance. "All right, so the men don't get taken to lunch at the Stork Club or their names in the gossip columns," said a spokesman for Burke Mc- Hugh, one of the four or five agencies In Manhattan book ing male as well as female models. "But their assignments are steady, the pay gets better every year, and their work life span can be longr, if they want to stay in it." Joel Rice, manager at Me- Hugh, said women still out number the men, about three to one, and out-earn them But the fellows, since World War II, have ben moving in. Major reason: Advertising suddenly is aware a man ap peals to a woman, and the lady customer is'mighty apt to listen when he delivers a pitch about say a refrigerator. A top-flight male model will earn $35 to $40 an hour, compared with the $50 to $75 some photographic and high fashion females haul down. But the girls have more over head, In clothes, hair-do and makeup. And the public, agencies said, are apt to tire of the female model sooner, because she is so well publicized. The girls also work run time," said Cye Perkins, former model and now as sistant manager for the Hart ford Agency. "For a lot of men, modeling is a sideline sort of a balance for their other interests. One of our top models sells insurance; an other owns a nightclub; one is a photographer." Typical of the men using modeling as a means to an end is Lionel Wiggam, one of Hartford's leading talents and a "regular" for years in newspaper advertisements for a men's clothing chain. Just A Pasilime Wiggam wants to devote full time someday to play writing. From Princeton, class of '43, he headed direct ly to Hollywood where he did screen plays for Warner Brothers and Universal-In ternational. One of his movie hits was "Smash-up," starring Susan Hayward. And. he's written numerous poems and stories, published in leading magazines, including "The New Yorker." Now, he's so well establish ed as a model he works at it two and one-half days a week in winter; only one day a week in summer. The rest of the time he devotes to writing. "The greatest danger in modeling: That a man is se duced by all the dough he can make, and doesn't pursue his prime ambition," said Wiggam. Infidelity a 1 w a ys hurts This is a natural reaction, especially in a relationship which has not -experienced many outside "jolts." Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that there is little to be gained in living in the past. What has been, has been. For those who are willing to accept this fact and go forward with good intent. time is a great healer of wounds. Bill's attitude of regret and his recognition of his mistake shows that he wants to sal vage his marriage. In a new environment, without custom ary or conventional restraints, many people do things which they would not do at home, in normal circumstances. This was amply demonstrated in the last war. Behavior patterns are a re sult of training, social pres sure, and inner drive; any or all of these may be eclipsed in strange or unusual situa tions or surroundings, given sufficient pressure. But a tem porary lapse does not indicate that the individual has changed or lost his moral values, especially if he is con scious of his off-beat pattern, as was Bill. Bill wants to save his mar riage. He does not want to hurt Sandra. Sandra can help him in his resolution by at tempting to understand why and how the situation arose, and by accepting his promise for the future. Both should try to talk more freely about their desires, goals, and plans for the future. Both should look forward, not back. Bill can do much toward making Sandra feel secure and desire- able, beloved, if you .will. Sandra can make Bill feel at tractive, stimulating both as a man and as a partner. She can try to make the home a pleasant place to stay, one in which both of them can find peace and love. If Bill and Sandra cannot gain this equilibrium together (and many cannot), then they should seek the guidance of a counselor who will aid them in evaluating the past and planning for the future together.
