(International) California Charges Wine Discrimination Made by Washington San Francisco OP) The State of California claims the State of Washington is dis criminating against California wines and it wants the U.S. Supreme Court to do some thing about it. Attorney General Edmund G. Brown of California, in documents now en route to the court, asked the high trib unal for an injunction prep etually restraining Washing ton from enforcement oi its wine laws, which he describ ed as unconstitutional. California, which produces 88 per cent of U. S. wine, as serts that Washington law is written as follows: To fix prices of Calif ornia wines higher than those of locally made products. To allow first sale of Cal ifornia products only in state liquor stores, while permit ting Washington vintages to be sold at both wholesale and retail by private business. To prevent California from advertising or promoting sales by direct contact with 4,800 retail liquor licensees, while allowing Washington producers to solicit trade dir ectly. The wine industry is dec lared by California law "to be affected with a public in terest," and the state spends $2,700,000 a year through its official agencies on advertis ing across the country. However, Brown said Calif ornia is not even permitted to use the U. S. mail to write any of the 4,800 retailers in Washington. The complaint further as serted that Washington im- Mrs. D. M. Why should she want to leave home? Shirley M. I feel like a leftover, overgrown child. Mrs. D. M. I am the mother of four children. My oldest daughter,. Shirley, is 23 and recently gave me the shock of my life by saying she wants to take an apart ment with a girl friend of hers. I have done everything I possibly could to give my daughter a nice home. I take care of all her clothes and she doesn't have to do a lick of work in the house, outside of keeping her own room neat. She has all the freedom in the world to come and go as she pleases. I have never interfered with her dates. Why should a girl like this want to leave home? My hus band and I feel that she is up to no good. We are worried to death. Shirley M. I have .ex plained to my mother, and she agrees, that if I want to do wrong I can do it without leaving home. I have no in tention of doing any such thing and feel that my par ents should trust me. My reasons for wanting to leave home are quite differ ent. I have never been away poses a 68 per cent mark-up on dessert wines, plus a 10 per cent sales tax. It also accused Washington of pre venting California distributors from using certain sized bottles employed by their competition. v Assistant Attorney General Wallace Howland, who pre pared the case, said a fifth costing 72 cents retail in Cal ifornia sells for 92 cents in a Washington State store. When a retail store wishes to sell it, it buys from the state and sells it for $1.33. (from home to go to college, I as so many girls have. I have never been entirely on my own. My mother does too much for me and I want a feeling of independence. Many of my friends have gotten married and I have come to feel like a leftover, overgrown child still living with my parents. My friend says she feels that way too and that's why we want to move. The Council: Shirley seems to have some sound reasons for wanting her own place. Whether or not her parents have anything to "worry" about depends upon how well they know her. Does she vol unteer fairly complete ac counts of her doings? Does she express her thoughts and attitudes? Does 'she bring her friends home? Does she seem to be generally happy? In any case, a. financially independent girl of Shirley's age can't be compelled to live at home if she doesn't want to. Living away may help her gain the maturity and self confidence she evidently feels she lacks, but she should be aware that it is not a total answer to her present discom fort. Shirley should realize that she has foolishly allowed herself to be placed in the position of a "leftover, over grown child." Apparently, Mrs. D. M. has taken too many of Shirley's rightful re sponsibilities upon herself. But Shirley should have fought, for her independence and self-sufficiency at home. She should not have permit ted herself to be waited on like a helpless child. She should have participated in the home like another adult.
