John Myers, principal of Phoenix elementary school, bought the land. Kubli, who has moved to a new home which he is leasing at 2858 Orchard Home Drive, Medford, reserved 180 acres of the ranch, and an additional 50 acres remains, which be longs to his sister, Mrs. Loren M. Schott, of San Luis Obis po. Calif. The pioneer home still stands, bearing the date of 1857. , The land was homesteaded by Kubli's grandfather, Cas per Kubli, who operated a store .and trading post there, as well as a store in Jackson ville. Later the ranch was owned by Henry Kubli, who served in the state legislature in Salem. During the last year Edward Kubli has sold real estate with the T. J. Hight agency in Medford, and has lived on an additional 25 acres adjoining the family estate, which was sold to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hunter, retired from farming at Colvil, Wash. For several months the residence on the estate was occupied by Frank Hibbs, who was operating a dairy on the ranch. Myers said his plans are in definite, but that he and Mrs. Myers will reside on the ranch at least during the coming summer, and that he may run cattle on the place. Robert Webb returned Sun day from Palo Alto, Calif., where he underwent treat ment for a heart ailment. He is convalescing at his home at Star ranger station. Farmers are getting ready for their spring work, and among the most enthusiastic of these is Clarence Buck, who has purchased a new tractor. After a winter recession, the Little Applegate knitting club will meet at the home of Mrs. Frank Mitchell on Top b' the Hill Tuesday, Feb. 18. The ladies will observe the sixth anniversary of the club, which first met at the home of Mrs. E. E. Cox on Feb. 14. Ten members attended at that time, and the present member ship has shown an increase. Ms. Earl McMullen of Eu gene is making an extended visit at the home of her sister, Mrs. Fred Straube. William C. Lamb, electron ics field airman apprentice, who recently completed Navy basic training at San Diego, is spending a 10-day leave here at the home of his moth er, Mrs. Fletcher Spencer. He will receive his first five weeks of training at the air man school at Norman, Okla., after which he will enroll in an aviation electronic techni cian school at Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. George Redhead ex pects to enter Sacred Heart hospital today to undergo mi nor surgery. The complexities of family relationships were portrayed by the Barnes Avenue players, who presented a brief mental health play at a meeting of Ruch Parent Teacher associa tion Friday. Those participat ing were Mrs. Fred Danielson, Mrs. Claud Potts, Dr. John Brandenburg, and Deana Pa tella of Medford. Mrs. Dave Winningham led discussion afterward. The next PTA event will be a benefit dance at the Grange hall Feb. 22. Funds will be used for con struction work planned at the s c h o ol. Visitors attending were Mrs. George Iaeger, Mrs. John Black Mrs. Earl Sharp, and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Salt marsh. Mr. and Mrs. Salt marsh became members and also on the list of new mem bers are Mr. and Mrs. Bert Harr, making a total of 105 members. The PTA plans to give a talent show in April. Dave Courtney entered Sac red Heart hospital Saturday, and is in a serious condition with a heart ailment. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stock man have moved from the Ruch area to Central Point. Stockman is employed at Skinner's garage, and Mrs. Stockman expects to continue 1848, to Sara Helen Whitman: ". . . Mrs. Howard Piete, Mrs. Roy Morrow, and Mrs. Jack Baker are project leaders from lower Applegate exten sion unit who are attending the county sewing workshop in Medford this month. About 15 women have signed for the project which will be given by leaders. Several visitors attended the meeting of Upper Applegate extension unit at the Grange hall Fednesday. They includ ed Mrs. Lester Rich and Mrs. Curtiss Gearhardt of the lower unit, Mrs. Henry Bur meister, Mrs. Frank Mitchell, Mrs. William Nostrand, and Mrs. Herman Walitalo. Twenty-five women attended the demonstration on pies and pastry. Project leaders to en roll in the county sewing workshop this month are Mrs. William Travis, Mrs. Joe Fer rand and Mrs. Harley Hall. Twenty women are registered to take the work. Mrs. Robert Sorber will continue as ACWW chairman, following designation of Mrs. Lynn Val entine. Mrs. Fred West and Mrs. Truman Hard attended a program planning meeting in Medford last week. Mr. and Mrs. Carter Hibbs of Burns spent the week end with Mrs. Hibb's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Winningham. Mrs. Hibbs is remaining here for the week to' visit friends. A representative of the county school superintendent's office will speak at the meet ing of the Applegate Parent Teacher association Friday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m. New laws in regard to the county school budget and insurance will be explained. Edward Milam and Tom Lishmane of the Navy were recent week end guests of Mi lam's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mansel Milam. They have been in Japan since Christ mas. They will return to the Pacific area. Godfrey in a wrapup of odds and ends of 1957 on one of his network programs mentioned a Friday evening social club which meets every Tuesday noon on the Twenty Miracle Miles. He said he didn't have the foggiest idea just where this was in Ore gon, but he was intrigued with the idea of a Friday club meet ing on Tuesday. Taken as Challenge Bill Comer, owner of radio station KBCH at Oceanlake in the heart of the Miracle Miles strip on Oregon's Lin coln county coast took God frey's remarks as a personal challenge. He decided to get Godfrey on the phone and tell him that the twenty miracle miles is a strip of vacation land on the Oregon coast from Otis Junction to Depoe Bay. But Comer had difficulties getting through a cordon of secretaries to reach the fam ous entertainer. Then residents of the area began betting Comer he never would reach Godfrey. The bets were to go to the March of Dimes. Leo nard was leaving home for the day, and since his wife was busy at the telephone with many committees, he wasn't able to tell her where he was going. He tried to telephone from several friends' homes in Jacksonville, but the line was busy. He drove out to the Applegate and telephoned a few more times. Toward noon the line was clear. A shipping box was built with location of the Twenty Mir acle Miles etched in the myrtlewood cover. An airline offered to fly the gift to Godfrey, deliver ing it to him personally in a limousine. The package, together with a letter signed by the mayors of Delake, Taft and Ocean like, was put aboard a plane at Portland today by a dele gation from the resort area. TRANSIT RIDERS DECLINE New York (UT The busi ness recession is costing the New York subway and sur face transit lines money, the Transit Authority reported Tuesday. Authority Chairman Charles L. Patterson said 5,- 452,916 fewer riders used the system in January than in January, 1957, and the drop cost the city $815,948 in rev enue from fares. In the seven months ending Jan. 31, total transit revenues declined $3, 230,044 compared with the similar period ending Jan. 31, 1957.
