Bartlett, Alaska's non-voting Democratic delegate to Con gress, accuses the administra tion of striking a discouraging blow at Alaska's hopes for statehood just when it "seem ed within our grasp." He cited a recent announce ment by Senate Republican Leader William F. Knowland (Calif.), that Republicans would try to broaden the statehood bill to include Ha waii. Terming this "an. adminis tration decision," Bartlett said "its inevitable effect will be to make statehood less likely for either Alaska or Hawaii.' He said past experience has demonstrated that statehood bills for the two territories must be considered separately In point of time If they are ! to get through Congress. ' "My understanding is that Hawaiians, generally, are willing to have Alaska break the trail for them, as they sought to break it for us in the past," he said in a pre pared statement. "We have announced that we intend to remain there, come what may in an effort to halt the delinquency of our government in continuing ac tions that threaten the well being of all men. "I pray that our act will move others to vigorous pro tests, too," said Willoughby on arrival here. Three Are Quakers Gale, 25, is single and the youngest in the group. He said, "If people really feel that it was right to kill 200,- 000 men, women and chil dren at Hiroshima and Naga saki, and that it is right to prepare to kill millions more, then so be it. However, I can not really believe that man is capable of feeling that." Huntington and Bigelow both are grandfathers in their 50s and both are Quakers. Willoughby also is a member of the Friends and Gale is the son of a Presbyterian minister. Bigelow was one of the 11 people jailed last summer aft er protesting against nuclear tests at the Nevada Proving Grounds. The 11 were jailed for trespassing after they mov ed into the heavily guarded off-limits site in groups of twos and threes. The group pleaded innocent in a Beatty, Nev., court and were found guilty at an im mediate trial. All were given suspended sentences of one year and were released. .
