EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sudden Change in Temperature More Likely To Result in Colds By DELOS SMITH ' United Press Science Editor New York W After the temperature changes sudden ly, people are more likely to catch colds than at other times. And people who live in close quarters with children are more likely to catch colds s 4 b 11 a it fl J who don't Deioi smith Both these statements were more or less proved in one of the most - thorough efforts to date to ; find out how the germs of. the - common cold and of similar r respiratory infections get about and why some people are more susceptible to them than others It was shown again that we acauire some kind of immu- ' nity to the common cold as we progress from babyhood into adulthood. But it is an extremely tricky, unrsliable Immunity. For example, the demonstrable immunity be . stowed by just one cold hard ly lasts any time at all. Children Most Susceptible Yet, the new study found, children under five who have never been out in the world, really, to pick up all - kinds of germs are the most susceptible to the common : cold and similar germs. The "unit"" studied was, in every case, a father and mother plus three chil dren, one of whom was under five. The units were watched by the scientists for two years. Every two weeks throat and nose swabs were taken of every 'individual in every unit and, of course, the appearance of a cold or a res piratory infection of any kind was a scientific fire-alarm. WALZER United Press Financial Editor New York OP! There's an old saying in Wall Street that when the little fellows buy more in odd lots than they sell, look out, there's trou gh Die aneaa. 3! 1 IIS 'OllHJK Jtxcnange nas knocked the props from under that saw with a Elmer Walzer tabulation go ing back to 1937. That tabula tion shows that the odd-lot- ters buy more than they sell most of the time. And, the ex change says they aren't all little fellows either because many big traders also deal in odd-lots. And last year odd-lotters bought nearly 15 million more shares than they sold while the market was declin ing 14 per cent in the Stand ard & Poor's 500 Stock Index. The operations of the odd-lot traders made up nearly 22 per cent of all the business done on the Stock Exchange in 1957. And odd-lot is anything less than 100 shares in trades where 100-share lots are standard and anything less than 10 shares where 10 is the unit of trading. Big Business This odd-lot business is bg stuff in the market. It's a complicated business, and one of the operations the lit tle or big trader doesn't have to know a thing about. He simply tells his broker to buy two shares of XYZ common which is traded in 100-share full lots, and the machinery is set in motion. His broker sends the order to the post where XYZ is traded. The order is placed on a hook and in a twinkling the odd-lot dealerat that post takes it. He may have one share in his inventory. He im mediately buys another hun dred shares. That means he will have an inventory of 99 shares of XYZ stock on hand until some other purchaser comes along. Point S. Riverside & Tickets, it if A. Schomer WON THE FREE T.V. Friday. February 7, 1958 lic health field-epidemiology. At all times there were 45 to 50 family units under study and the idea was to find out who introduced the cold into the family group, who in the group was most likely to catch it once it was introduc ed and what living conditions encouraged its spread within the group. Only over-crowding was definitely pinned down as a condition which helped the germs spread. There was some indication that the young children who were poorly clad were more sus ceptible than the children who weren't, but that wasn't a definite conclusion. Since XYZ was selling at 33Vi, the purchaser gets his two shares at 33 V a share, the extra eighth being the dealer's differential. If the stock sold over 40 the differ ential would be V4 point. The tabulation referred to is carried in the current issue of "The Exchange," the New York Stock Exchange maga zine. Purchases Top Sales It shows that in 18 of the 21 years cited, odd-lot pur chases topped sales. Last year the excess of purchases amounted to 14,932,827 shares, the largest balance for any of the 21 years in the tab ulation. Total odd-lot volume in 1957 was 122,503,127 shares, third largest in the 21-year list. The largest was 132,478, 312 in 1937 when it made up 32.4 per cent of all the busi ness done on the exchange. The trend of purchasing continues this year. On Tues day, customers purchased 290,432 shares in odd-lots and sold 230,750 odd-lot shares in the regular way and 4,759 shares short. Plywood Price Drop Noted in Portland Portland (IP) A sharp drop in Douglas fir plywood prices was reported here to day with quotations sagging $2 to $68 per thousand square feet for one-half-inch AD in dex grade. It was the second decline in two weeks and left plywood prices equal to last year's low. Plywood sheathing prices held unchanged at $90 on five-eighth-inch stock. The indus try blamed increased produc tion rather than slow demand for the price drop. Production has been running about five per cent higher than a year ago. Americans will consume eight billion frankfurters this year. Linked up, the frank furters would reach 600,000 miles more than the distance to the moon and back. S. Central Open 24 ON DISPLAY ? They're of good quality, good value. Four types of lamb chops us ually are available. The loin chops are easily identified by the T-bone dividing the sir loin from the smaller tender loin muscle. Rib chops are cut thick and are recognized by the rib bone. Shoulder chops usually are cut under one inch in thickness. The chop with the round bone may be pan-broiled but the shoulder chop with the blade bone is best braised. Freshly ground lamb patties are increasingly popular, by the way. For good flavor, sprinkle lamb chops lightly with rubbed thyme, rosemary or a bit of marjoram. Mint jelly or mint sauce remains unsur passed for accompanying lamb to the table. BB65V 11 Morse Urges Bill Consideration Washington Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.) has urged that state legislatures give "care ful consideration" to his mod el legislation concerning drunk driving tests upon which agreement was reached today by a House-Senate con ference committee. More expressed confidence that both houses will speedily pass the revised version of his bill which provides objective standards in the law deter mining the weight to be given blood, breath and urine tests in drunk driving accidents. "I am glad to see that the conferees improved the bill by adding negligent homicide and manslaughter as crime to be included. This should strengthen law enforcement considerably," Morse ob served. The Oregon senator added, "Although the new law per tains only to the District of Columbia, considerable na tional interest has been shown in it, and many states may adopt similar laws based on this model bill." "I am happy to see that the Congress has endorsed this important procedure aimed at insuring safety on the high way while protecting the rights of the innocent. I hope that the legislatures of states not having this protection will give careful considera tion to this model legisla tion," Morse concluded.
