Soldier's Dual Role
Handed Pentagon
San Francisco OP) The
Pentagan has been handed the
thorny problem of a Califor
nia man who led two lives in
the U.S. Army one in Korea
and the other as a deserter.
The soldier joined the serv
ice in 1945 under the alias of
Alva L. Spivey. He deserted
at Camp Roberts, Calif., a
year later.
Five months later he re-
enlisted in the Army under
his real name, Stormy Knight,
ana served four years in
Korea before being honorably
discharged.
Last week he surrendered
voluntarily and toldNhis story.
The Pentagon must now de
cide whether to court martial
Knight, or give Spivey an ad
ministrative discharge to clear
the books.
But in the meantime, he
was told to go home to his
wife and seven children in
Alviso, Calif., until the Army
can make up its mind.
Italy Communists
Eye Lost Members
Rome (IP) Italy's Commu
nists voiced hope today of re
gaining the 200,000 members
they admitted losing last year
in the party's worst postwar
crisis.
A communique published
today in the party organ
L'Unita said 1,713,000 persons
or 94.1 per cent of last year's
memberships had renewed
their party cards 50,000
more than the number of
cards issued the same time
last year.
L'Unita said reaching the
2,000,000 mark claimed in
1956 was a "perfectly feasible
goal." It said this year's card
holders included 56,345 new
members.
