In the first place I imagine that usually there is some stuttering or other nervous or mental trouble in the family some thing that pre disposes the child to nerv- Dr. Alvarez ous tension or poor control of his muscles. have known many families in which three or four members stuttered. Oftentimes, one of the parents or grandparents will say, "Well, I don't stutter now, but as a child, I did for a while." How can I desert my unhappy child. Mildred F. My sister is a 60-year-old widow, who is liv ing a perfectly miserable life because her daughter is so mean to her. Ann goes to worlc every day in spite of her age, but she has no peace or pleasure when she comes home. The daughter, Nora, made a bad marriage about ten years ago and has been soured on men and life in general ever since. She is just a bundle of nerves and picks on her mother for every little thing. I would like Ann to come live with me. I am also a widow and I am living alone. I have plenty of room in my home and we could really en joy life together. Ann D. How can a mother think about her own comfort when she sees that her child is suffering? Nora married a real heel and spent the most miserable two years of her life with him She is now nearly 40 and has nothing in her life. She hates her job, has no men friends and her future looks hope less. How can I leave her alone? At the same time, some times I think I'll have to get away from her or she'll drive me crazy. She yells at me for nothing at all. Then she cries and says she didn't mean to do it, so I can't hold anything against her. I would be hap pier with Mildred, but what about Nora? The Council: As we get the picture, Ann is now provid ing her daughter with an out let for her nerves. Beyond that and possibly serving as a domestic convenience she is doing nothing, and is able to do nothing, to help her daughter. This sacrifice is unneces sary and it may be hurting Nora even more than Ann. Nora is evidently living in en tirely . negative terms. She hates her job, is irritated with her mother and, beyond these feelings, has nothing. . We think it would be a good idea if Ann rocked this unpleasant boat by letting her daughter know that she finds the living arrangement unsat isfactory. She should, by all means, move in with her sister if it would make her happier. Her "child" is now nearly 40 and is responsible for creating a life of her own. Ann should recommend that her daughter find companion ship of her own age. If Nora is seriously depressed, - she should avoid living alone, and should try to find a young woman with whom she can share her apartment. Such an arrangement would force her tobe more consid erate of somebody and that experience in itself might lead her out of her self-centered brooding. Nora needs friends, inter ests, hobbies but not a scape goat, the role her mother is now playing. If she makes no effort to find a happier, healthier way of life, her mother should suggest that she seek psychiatric help. Some people think that left-handed children stutter if they are made to use their right hand, but some experts do not accept this statement Professor Wendell Johnson, of Iowa, feels that many a child who "ers" and "uhs" would not go into stuttering if only his parents would pay no at tention to what he is doing, and would not make him so self-conscious. Actually, as Dr. Johnson reminds us, there are very few of us adults who talk steadily without any in terruption or hesitation. Par ents must not expect their boy always to talk as fluently and rapidly like a television master of ceremonies. As many parents know, their child will stutter mainly in front of them, while, be fore a stranger or with his playmates, he may be all right. This shows how much of stuttering is due to self consciousness and anxiety and fear of failure. Can that condition be cured? Yes, there are thousands of people going about who are cured stutterers. One can oft en recognize them by the fact that they "block" on an occa sonal word. It helps if the child can have a good teacher. Today in many big cities, there is a speech expert avail able for school children who need help. Parents should ask the school teacher about this There are books written to help parents of stuttering children. MILITARY MOVE Sioux Falls, S. D. Iff!
