Peasant Girl Talked Mary at Lourdes 100 Br ROBERT MUSEL United Press Correspondent Lourdes, France (W Lourdes was a little garrison town scattered at the foot of a great castle in a "lost cor ner of the Pyrenees" 100 years ago. It must have seemed such an unlikely setting for the story of Bernadette But there it happened, a AFTER-BOWLING TREAT Bowling, the country's No. 1 family sport, is booming into the big time. You'll score "300" with fellow bowling enthusiasts of all ages when you plan a soup break at the house after the game. Bowling is a family and friends affair. It has been go ing on for 7,000 years but has really zoomed in popularity in recent years. It attracts all ages. There's an American Bowling Congress for men, the Women's International Bowling Congress for women and the American Junior Bowling Congress for young folks. And there are the mil-1 lions of assorted families and friends who just phone ahead, reserve an alley, enjoy fine ex ercise, have fun without championships in mind. All Get Hungry Those who go bowling get hungry. Those who watch championship matches beam ed into homes via TV, get hungry. For all, we have home-tested soup sipping sug gestions certain to satisfy. Bowling atmosphere is easily achieved by painting pennant or other team insignia or emb lem on the soup-serving pitch er, bowl or soup mugs. Crackers, of course: Offer cracker assortment that is dif ferent; perhaps potato crack ers, pretzel sticks and junior size shredded wheat biscuits We find a variety of crackers in separate bowls preferred to crackers that become jumbled on one platter. Offer olives, pickles andor button mush rooms3 if you like. Soups for Sipping Pour cold soups from any Ditclfsr. Pour hot soups from a heat resistant pitcher, from a china coffee pot or the carafe with a candle warmer. Ladle soup from a tureen or from your very biggest mix ing bowl fancied up with an appropriate design. Lots of people? Use paper cups be ing sure to have the proper one for hot drinks. Other wise, mugs or big cups. "300 Soup. For each four servings, blend one can con densed green pea soup and one can condensed tomato soup; stir in one cup water and one cup milk; add a dash of curry powder. Hot or cold! Energy Soup. Combine a can of condensed tomato soup with a can of beef broth; add a can of water and heat or chill, whichever you choose Other Sippers. Other good soups for sipping are cream of chicken, cream of mush room, cream of celery, cream of asparagus, tomato, beef broth, black bean and of course consomme and beef broth. Give flavor fillip to beef broth by adding a dust ing of cinnamon, cloves or nutmeg, a slice of lemon or twist of lemon peel, a dash of Worcestershire, Tabasco or Angostura. As we said, plenty of crack ers and try some of the new cracker and pretzel varieties. Teen-Agers Delight Before or after any game whether bowling or a specta tor sport, teen agers take to that magnificent Roman con coction, the pizza. Sip a hot soup while the pizza bakes. We do it the easy way. If more than one member of your family takes sandwiches to school andor to work, con sider getting a few words of praise for making-up these fillings ahead of time ready for spreading. Each combina tion here makes filling for four generous sandwiches. All store well. Combine one - half cup ground cooked frankfurters, one-quarter cup chopped wal nuts, one-half tablespoon pre pared mustard, one-quarter cup mayonnaise or other salad dressing. Combine one-quarter cup apple, one tablespoon lemon juice, one-quarter cup milk, three-quarter cup peanut but ter and one-quarter teaspoon salt. : Combine one cup ground bologna sausage, one-quarter cup chopped celery, one-half teaspoon minced onion and three tablespoons mayonnaise or other salad dressing. Combine one three-ounce package cream cheese and two teaspoons Worcestershire sauce . until soft; add one tablespoon chopped green pep per or chopped canned pi miento. Combine three-quarter cup mashed liver sausage, two hard-cooked eggs, chopped, three tablespoons mayonnaise or ' other salad dressing, one teaspoon lemon juice and two teaspoons minced onion. Combine one .three-ounce package cheese, one-third cup peanut butter, one tablespoon orange juice and one-quarter teaspoons orange rind. Combine one cup canned fish flakes or one cup cooked letfover fish, one tablespoon chopped celery, one table spoon chopped sweet or sour pickle, three tablespoons may onnaise, one-half tablespoon catsup, one teaspoon horse radish, salt and pepper. Combine three-quarter cup ground ham, one-third cup drained crushed pineapple, teaspoon brown sugar and dash of ground cloves. Sauerkraut 'n Franks Sauerkraut and frankfurt ers are so highly thought of that they have a week named for them and this is the week. They're well nigh perfect just heated and served together. But for a tmly gourmet touch, add to the sauerkraut, two tart cored but unpeeled ap ples, cut up, one medium on ion and a half cup of sauterne if you've some sauterne handy. More than six million of i them will come as pilgrims to the grotto where the little peasant girl said she saw and spoke to the Virgin Mary. Became a Saint Lourdes is preparing to re ceive them. It is still a small town of about 15,000 in its valley among the towering hills, although several times more populous than it was in the time of Bernadette Sou birous who became Sister Marie-Bernard who is now Sf. Bernadette. For many months Canon i Marthy, who is the church's secretary-general of pilgrim ages, has been preparing for this centenary year. Some think he is being cau tious in his estimate of three times the yearly average of two million for the anniver sary. Already there are 650 mass pilgrimages scheduled 80 from the United States against only 274 for all of last year. Pope May Attend Thirty cardinals and hun dreds of archbishops and bis hops will attend the various functions ending with the fes tival of the Immaculate Con ception on Dec. 8. There is some hope that Pope Pius may come here dur ing the year as a pilgrim rather than Pontiff since his official presence would raise his appearance to the formali ty of a state visit The hill of Massabielle has been transformed since 14 year-old Bernadette said she heard the sound of a storm although there was no storm, and saw emerging from the grotto a golden cloud follow ed by a beautiful lady who later commanded: "Go tell the priests that I wish them to build here a chapel . . ." Above the grotto since 1889 has stood the great church of Notre Dame de Lourdes, its basilica holds only 3,500 peo ple and for the celebrations and underground basilica. named for St. Pius X, big enough for 20,000, is being rushed to completion. Many cures and 54 "mir acles" have been claimed either from drinking Lourdes water or from prayer at the grotto. The church makes no special point of these. Nowa days it prefers the emphasis to be on faith. Such faith, it says, as the simple peasant girl whose experience in the grotto created one of the great shrines of Christendom. bound to go promptly on your list of serve-oftens. V4 cup brown sugar 2 cups whole wheat flour 1 pup sifted all-purpose flour teaspoon baking soda 2V2 teaspoons baking powder Wz teaspoons salt 2 cups canned apple sauce Vz cup . light molasses 1 cup chopped walnut meats Combine sugar, flours, bak ing soda, bakiny, powder and salt. Combine apple sauce and molasses; add to dry ingredi ents and mix welli Add nut meats. Pour into greased 9V4x 5V4x234 inch (or comparable size) loaf pan. Let stand 20 minutes. Bake in moderate 350 degree, oven, IV2 hours. Cool 10 minutes in pan. Re move to rack; cool. This slices better the day after baking, so try to wait. Prune Coffee Cake Plentiful,, plump, rich-flavored prunes have high amounts of quick-energy fruit sugars; give flavor and tex ture excitment to this break fast coffee cake which is good warm or cold. 8 large cooked prunes 2V4 cups biscuit mix 13 cup sugar teaspoons cinnamon 1 egg ' V2 cup milk 2 tablespoons melted butter Topping Pit prunes and cut into halves. Combine biscuit mix, sugar and cinnamon. Beat egg lightly and add milk and melt ed butter. ,'Jtir into dry mix ture blending well. Turn into greased eight-inch square pan. Arrange prunes over batter and sprinkle with topping. Bake in moderately hot oven, 375 degrees, about 35 minutes. Topping Blend one-third cup brown sugar (packed), one-quarter cup biscuit mix, two tablepsoons butter or margarine until crumbly. EMBARRASSING BUMP Nashville, Tenn. (IP) El don Ray Rippey, Coy Mack Meeks. James E. Baggett and James L. Ferguson crossed the railroad tracks too fast, and today face safe robbery charges as the result. Grange Notes POMONA GRANGE The January meeting of Jackson County Pomona Grange, held in the Roxy Ann Grange hall, opened at 10:50 ajn. with Master Robert Bit terling presiding. All officers were present as well as all committee chairmen, except legislative. There were 82 present, with Lyle Van Gordon and his wife of Josephine county Pomona Grange, visiting. Lecturer Mabel Wertz an nounced the lecturers' school to be held in Ashland March 31 and April 1, and stated all Grange members are invited to attend whether a lecturer or not. Chaplain Hattie Hendrick- son reminded members that the next meeting of Pomona will be the Memorial service. Date of the practice which will be held just before this meeting will be announced at the county conference, she said. If any Grange is unable to have a representative at the April meeting, but has a mem ber to be honored, let her know and she will prepare flowers for them. Ralph James, Secretary of Jackson County Grange coun cil, stated a resolution was passed at the last council meeting recommending that floor work be added to the Master's conference. I A resolution regarding the j proposal for reactivation of j Veterans' hospital facilities at i Camp White was introduced and unanimously approved. Committee reports were heard from the following: bees, Delmar Smith; beef, Wil dred Davies; dairy, Chester Jensen; horticulture, Dee Hen- drickson; education, Roberta Hill; flood control, Fred Hall HEC Chairman Edith Poe urg ed all granges to support the Spence Memorial scholarship fund. The yearly scholarship is now an outright gift, and it is hoped that a scholarship can be established in each of the six districts of the state, These scholarships are avail able to any relative of a Granger. A varied program was pre- sented by Lecturer Mabel Wertz, opening with rounde lay singing. A panel discus sion on juvenile delinquency followed, with six members participating. A recitation was given by Robert Warren of Gold Hill and Mrs. Weldon of Roxy Ann Grange presented her little dog in several skits. The lecture hour concluded with two religious songs pre sented by Mr. and Mrs. Mil lard of the Gold Hill Grange. Masters progress reports were heard from Gold Hill, Live Oak, Eagle Point, Cen tral Point, Phoenix, Roxy Ann, Upper Rogue, Upper Applegate, Griffin Creek, Shady Cove, and Butte Falls. A donation to assist in the publication of the report of Agricultural Planning com mittee was approved by the Grange. Prizes were presented by Master Robert Bitterling to the winners of the Jackson County Pomona Champion Grange contest of 1957. First prize was velvet station scarves, won by Upper Apple- gate Grange; second, over seer's rug, won by Griffin Creek Grange: third, rose wood gavel and striking blocks won by Eagle Point Grange; fourth, town marker, Phoenix Grange; fifth, mount ed agate. Central Point Grange. ' Announcements were made of the county conference for all officers of subordinate Granges, and any members interested, to be held Wed nesday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. at Central Point Grange hall; a turkey dinner at Upper Ap plegate Grange, Sunday, Feb. 16, and the need of Lake Creek Grange for MJB cof fee bands to assist them in getting an electric urn. (IP) Authori ties today were investigating a man accused of taking credit for a worthless check. A vic timized merchant told police the suspect made a $9 puT chase and offered a $250 check in payment. The merch ant didn't have that much cash on hand, so the check passer took what he had, plus an IOU for the balance. The Mississippi river delta covers 12,300 square miles. In the absence of the presi dent, Robert Duncan introduc ed the entertainers. He also introduced Mrs. Una Inch, aunt of Mrs. Tucker, and Mrs. Tom Emmens, Mrs. Inch's daughter. He commented that Mrs. Tucker had visited the valley as a child. Prior to the dinner Dr. George G. Roseberry, pastor of First Methodist church, gave the blessing.
