Demands for Steps To Curb Mid-Air Collisions Voiced Los Angeles HP) Public demands are growing for the government to do something to prevent air collisions like the three which cost 55 lives iff three days in southern California. The clamor of politicians and public officials became louder as military and civil ian teams pressed investiga tions into the reasons for the air tragedies. Forty-eight persons died Saturday in the collision of a Military Air Transport Service C118 and a Neptune P2V Navy bomber over the heavily populated suburb of -jNorwalk. , The collision came just a day after two B26s collided in flight near Barstow, Calif. Two crewmen were killed in the crash of one of the planes near Daggett. The other land ed safely. Then, Sunday two private planes smashed together over Yorba Linda, about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles, killing four persons in a Cessna and the pilot of a Piper Tri-Pacer. The toll for the three days was 55 dead. Demand Investigation Gov. Goodwin J. Knight has joined in demands for a full-scale congressional inves tigation of air traffic prob lems by Sen. Thomas Kuchel (R.-Calif.) and local supervi sors. Kuchel said the Norwalk accident, the worst in Cali fornia history, may point up the need for a single federal authority to control air space in the interest of safety of those who are in the air and those on the ground. Supervisor Kenneth Han wired Defense Secretary Neil McElroy: "A thorough investigation is needed of the crash and new rules or regulations might be necessary to pre vent recurrence of such tragedy. With the increased air traffic of both military and civilian aircraft, new rules of safety or better en forcement of existing safety rules is necessary. Wreckage Studied Navy and Air Force teams, by Brig. Gen. George S. Cas sady, deputy commander of the MATS Atlantic division, pushed their investigation of the Norwalk crash today. Wreckage of the two planes which showered down on a sheriff's substation, homes and businesses was taken to Los Alamitos Naval air sta tion for study to determine what happened. The sky was clear when the C-118 took off from Long Beach airport at 7:08 p.m headed for McGuire AFB in New Jersey with 41 aboard The P2V bomber, carrying eight naval reservists, was airborne on a training flight at Los Alamitos about 20 miles away at 7:07 p.m. Both pilots were flying un der "visual flight rules" in their "climb outs" from their airfields. A few minutes later, about . 2,500 feet above Nor walk the two planes smashed together. A bright light flash ed across the sky and the shattered planes fell to earth, raining wreckage and bodies over a wide area. The Hollywood Scene Hollywood (W The young, blond German waiter who clicked his heels in front of the table and opened the wine bottle with a flourish was no exception. Romy Schneider, one of Eu rope's leading young actress es, and certainly one of the prettiest, has been the delight of New York and now Holly wood's foreign restaurant workers since her United States arrival from Germany two weeks ago. Maybe it's because they get to use their German, or may be it's attractive Romy! In any event, Romy and her actress mother have done nothing but hold court since their arrival under the aus-J pices of Walt Disney. The 19-year-old star is here to push her first film to be distributed In the United States, "The Story of Vickie." Disney's Buena Vista purchased the Austrian-made film and dub bed in English. Potential Hazards A dinner - time interview with Romy can be hazardous. specially if it's held in range of a musician. Or if an Ameri- can movie star should walk in. Or they serve seafood. Just about the time you're exploring the reasons behind the girl's refusal to pose for cheesecake ("Leg art is not my occupation or thinking- I can stand on my ability alone"), a beaming, bespec tacled violinist takes his cue, And the next questions must be sandwiched in be- tween a Vienese waltz and the happy humming of a young . girl who suddenly remembers : she was born there. In between waltzes, Romy explained that, "My Fair Lady" in New York has been the highlight of her trip so - far and that she can't get over the "tempo" of the United States. Everything Quick "Everything is so quick and so exact," she said in accented English. "Just so many min utes for this and then it's time to do something else." In the middle of explaining what the "something else" is, young Miss Schneider ges tured again for the seafood table. "You know, you just can't get shrimps in Europe," she said. By HAZEL JOHNSON United Press Writer The daughter of actor par ents (mama is well-known on the continent as M a g d a Schneider and Romy's father is German matinee Idol Wolf Albach - Retty), Romy is ap preciative of the giant-sized professional assist that came from her family. "But it can't be family alone," both she , and her mother, acknowledged. "All a mother can do is hold the stirrup," Mrs. Schneider said. 'The child has to ride." Klamath Indian Land Said Worth $123,725,018.10 Klamath Falls (IP) Thomas B. Watters, management spe cialist for the Klamath Indian reservation, has released to tribal leaders a tentative appraisel figure listing the net worth of the reservation at $123,725,018.10. The appraisal figure was contained in a letter to Wat ters from Hatfield Chilson undersecretary of the interior. who said he would submit those figures to the Senate In dian affairs subcommittee on Monday. Not Finally Accepted Chilson told Watters the figures had not been accepted finally because some sup porting data had not been re ceived and reviewed, but he said that data was expected momentarily. He explained that "We do not expect that it will affect the summary figures except for 1958 trans actions." Chilson also explained that tribal assets, for the purposes of this appraisal, were com puted at realization value which means the amount which it is estimated may be realized under the terms of Senate Bill 527 as amended The appraisal, long awaited in the Klamath basin, shows rea lization value as of Oct. 21, 1957, and other values as of Feb. 28, 1957. It does not re flect timber sales after the ap praisal date or tribal expendi tures in fiscal 1958, according to Chilson. Chilson Testifies Itemized appraisal figures as presented to Watters by Chilson were: 95 timber units valued at $118,391,610: 22 grazing units $468,990; two marsh units $407,056; three farm units $331,720; four agency buildings $142,000; ten other units, $3,982,719. Chilson testified in Congress regarding two separate pieces of proposed legislation, one of which would call for full gov ernment purchase of tribal as sets and one which would ctll for sale of the assets to private bidders with the government buying the marsh units for use as a game preserve.
