Colo Living in Diaper-Clad Glory
In Cage at Columbus, Ohio, Zoo

gorilla ever bom in captivity,
,Colo. the pride of the Colum
bus (Ohio) Zoo. is now more
than a year old and living in
'diaper-clad glory with a fixed j
notion about her personal sta
tus she thinks she's human.
"Other gorillas are just
plain gorillas to her; she re
gards her parents as a couple
of odd characters," said Earl
Davis, zoo superintendent.

hour, and an altitude of 200 to 300 miles. The X-15 is a
- 50-foot-long cylinder mostly fuel tank with small
- stubby wings, a robot navigational system and other auto
matic equipment to lessen the burden of the pilot at
- speeds of 4000 miles an hour or more.
We've got five nurses for
her, and they've spoiled her
rotten. She cries when they

Colo, you may remember,
burst with bombshell force
upon world zoo circles 13
months and two weeks ago
with a triple triumph. It was
the first gorilla breeding, first
conception, and first birth in
captivity. From the moment
of birth, she's been under 24
hour human care, coddled,
pampered, vitamin stuffed.
Has Powerful Bite
''She tries out her new
teeth on everything, and she's
got a powerful bite," said
Davis in a phone interview at
his Columbus Zoo office

more. Those women nurses
have spoiled her, and she'd
bite me if I tried to take her
from one of them. The only
way a man can handle her is
get in the cage and play with
her awhile. But she's not at
all vicious.
She weighs 22 pounds and
is about 18 inches high in the
squatting position, but she
can reach up about a yard
standing up. The only dam
age she does is unintentional
with her powerful finger
grasp. Sometimes our nurse
girls will have badly bruised
arms. We feel that we'll be
able to handle her safely for
many years.
"I said when she was born
that she was a 550,000 baby.
She's proved it. We more than
doubled our attendance fee
intake this last eight-month
season. About 650,000 to
700,000 persons saw her then.
We have a big, plate-glass-front
nursery, and the public
watches her feeding, bathing
in the sink, diaper changing,

scuffle, and his jugular vein was severed. He was brought to the hospital with "not
enough blood left in him to keep a chicken alive." Averett regained consciousness
after surgery, three pints of plasma, five pints of whole blood and one pint of blood
substitute.

"She got a basketball of
toys, plastic and rubber, for
Christmas, and we give her a
few at a time. She's graduated
from the bottle to-baby foods,
junior size, along witn some
solids and fresh fruits. She
eats on demand whimpers
when hungry morning,
noon, and night.
Although Colo has no es
pecial feeling for her father,
Baron, 12, and her mother,
Christina, 9, they seem to
know her for their young.
"The mother," Davis said,
"admires her and will offer
her food through the bars."

Cub Scouts Get Awards
Prospect The Cub Scouts
held their regular pack meet
ing Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 8
p.m. at the community hall.
Those receiving awards in
Den 1 were Gary Dowing, the
Bear badge; and Jerry Wil
son, Alvin Kayola and Aurtor
Andressen, the Lion badge.
A new member, Mike Sar
gent, received his Cub scarf
and Cub pin.
In Den 3, a' new member,
Rusty Nichols, received the
Bobcat pin and Cub scarf.

of his brother, Stanford, and
