Dick Travis, Lloyd Pope Climb In Holiday Handicap Golf Mix Dick Travis and Lloyd Pope rose from fourth to sec ond place in Rogue Valley Country club holiday golf handicap standing during the past week and are within two points of the leaders. Games San Francisco OPi The San Francisco Forty-Niners todav announced thev would play four pre-season games at Kezar Stadium next August and September, opening against the New York Giants on Aug. 17. The other exhibitions are against the Chicago Cardinals, Aug. 31; Cleveland Browns, Sept. 7, and the Philadelphia Ragles, Sept. 21. Beavers Hire Terry Debay As Assistant Corvallis in Terry De bay, former player at UCLA, Monday was named as an assistant football coach at Oregon State. Debay replaces Clay Staple ton who has accepted the head coaching job at Iowa State. Coach Tommy Prothro said Debay, who served one year as an assistant here before entering the Air Force, would report as soon as he is releas ed from the service. Debay played at UCLA when Prothro was an assist ant coa:h there under. Red Sanders. Prothro had said he wanted a man who has had experience either as a player or coach, or both, in the single wing. They defeated Ken Knapp and Robert Brown 8 up to bring their total to 23 for 10 matches. Leaders Ed Hall and Frank Allen broke even in their 11th match to keep their tab uation of 25. Ken Teeter and Everett Mc Graw took a big step upward with a 7 up win over Ed Nich ols and Jack Eidswick. They have a plus 8 total for six matches. Russ Heysell and Ed Gordon with a four-point win over Clayton Lewis and Jim Shel don replaced those two in fifth position. Lewis and Shel don fell to seventh. The bandit gave teller Bar bara Austin a note which read, "There is a gun in this bag and it is pointed right at you. Give me your 5s, 10s, and 50s. Comply and you will not be harmed." When she gave him the money he stuffed it in his overcoat pocket and walked from the bank. The teller said the gunman was six feet one-inch tall, weighed more than 200 pounds, had blond hair and blue eyes and looked about 40 or 50. He wore a full length orange and brown checked overcoat. The hoSiup was the 10th bank robbery in the Portland area since January, 1957. Major Leagues Set Game Dates For Preseason New York OP) American and National league teams will play each other in a total of 167 exhibition games dur ing spring training, which of ficially opens less than four weeks from today. American league teams will play, a total of 221 exhibition games and National league teams will play 217, it has been announced. The Dunkers managed to hang on to second spot in the afternoon league with a 19 to 18 nod over the Bushwackers. Mau Maus had an equally tough time hanging on to third place alone. They tipped the Bony Five 21 to 20. Portland Bakery Restored by Union Portland (W The Mult nomah County Labor Coun cil, in a move to keep faith with ousted Teamster union locals, Monday night restor ed the Marckx Home Delivery Baker to its unfair-to-labor listings. The bakery had been re moved from the list only a week ago but the council re versed that action by a near ly unanimous vote Monday night after learning that Teamster Bakery Drivers local 499 still considers the bakery unfair. Council delegates indicated the vote -would help to close the ranks of Portland or ganized labor between the AFL-CIO and the Teamsters who were ousted from the council by orders on the in ternational level. One council member said " you cannot win a strike in Portland with out the help of the teamsters." Tuesday, February 4, 1 958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVE1C Giant Missiles Silent, Then Roar Like Thunder in Climb The largest collection of battle statuary in the world is at Gettysburg, Pa., where more than 2,500 monuments decorate the Civil War battlefield. I Cape Canaveral, Fla. W One of Uncle Sam's great mis siles blasting up from Cape Canaveral is awesome in its silence at first, then roars like thunder ss it climbs ma jestically into ihe sky. It's hard to say just which metal bird makes the most noise, but with the wind just right to carry the rumble the takeoff surge of a 100-ton in tercontinental Atlas might bounce you out of bed. To a birdwatcher four or five miles away, a missile makes not a sound at first. Flame belches from its tail and a great cloud of steam and smoke billows beneath it. Then, still silently, the bird begins to rise slowly, seem ingly supported fantastically by only the orange cone of flame streaming behind. Tremendous Power But a hint of the crashing power of the engine which thrust it upward comes with the first shattering roar that drifts over the water and down the beach. Windows rat tle and the earth trembles with the long hollow stac cato of the roaring missile. It may have been the van tage point on the Cape barely a mile from the launching pad or perhaps the knowl edge of the many hopes riding up with the bird but the thunder of the Army's satel lite-carrying Jupiter-C Friday night seemed to defy recollec tion of a noisier missile. Newsmen and photogra phers were looking straight up in the jet nozzle of the big Jupiter-C as soon as it rose a few hundred feet from the ground. The noise came faster, since they were closer, and drowned out the excited voices screaming into tele phones and microphones. No Pipsqueaks There seem to be no pip squeaks among the missiles. The takeoff of the Snark pi lotless bomber last week brought residents running to their doors just at daybreak. But most were too late to see the streaking missile, which zooms up quickly and at a low angle. The ground-to-air Bomarcs and the Lockheed X-17 test rockets roar up so fast that few of them are seen. By the time their noise reaches pub lie beaches, the missiles are well out of sight. Only a va por trail high in the sky marks their course. But the noisiest of the mis siles are the big ones such as the Atlas and the intermediate range Jiipiters and Thors. The Jupiter is all the more spec tacular because 'it usually is fired at night, and lights up the sky for miles with the orange glow of its jet. What the 5,000-mile, range Titan will sound like when it flies for the first time, no one knows. But odds are it will come close to dwarfing the roar of most other missiles. Weasels are of considerable economic importance in the farmlands .where they occur. Authorities estimate they kill millions of mice and rats each year.
