By DORIS HUGHES Central Point Correspendent Alexander Malcom Smith known throughout Alaska and the Arctic as Sandy, is soak ing up some balmy southern Oregon weather this week as he visits at the home of Mr and Mrs. E. R. Yocom of Central Point. Sandy, whose discoveries and exploits in the Northland are many, was born 88 years ago in Iverness, Scotland. He could well pass for a man of 50. He stands straight and is alert with his Scottish blue eyes missing nothing. His skin is tanned and his voice Is firm and clear. Sandy Smith left Scotland when he was 18 and came to the Western Hemisphere as an indentured worker for the Hudson Bay company which pioneered Canada's early development. Well-Traveled Explorer The well-traveled explorer is credited with the discovery of the gas and oil field which is today known as Naval Oil Reserve No. 4. It is located near Smith Bay, which is named for Sandy's uncle, Don ald Smith, who was head of the Hudson Bay company. It contains numerous gas and oil wells. One of the lakes of oil is lOVi acres in area and another is iVi acres. They average 3Vi feet deep. They are, however, a death trap to waterfowl in the area and even to caribou. Remains of mastodons have been found there. Smith stated that he knows of places where oil has been seeping into the ocean for centuries. At the beginning of the Gold Rush, Sandy was ap pointed trail blazer for the Royal Northwest M o unted Police. He went ahead with his dogs and chartered the 1,500 mile route between Edmonton and the New Eldo rodo. He also guided the Mounties into the Rat river district where many people were saved from the scurvey plague. He was second In command of the Sir George Hubert Wilkins expedition to the North Pole in 1926. Smith was a member of the first grand jury of the District of Alaska at Circle city on the Yukon. Disproves Map He disproved the map show ing no timber in the Arctic region by discovering a grove of cottonwood trees in a water shed. He photographed the discovery. He takes many pic tures and colored slides of unusual sights. He made a col lection of 113 different speci mens of wild flowers of the Arctic and presented it to a Rockford, 111., girls college. Malcolm's river which runs from Alaska into Canada and into the Mackenzie river is named for him. A post office in Alaska has also been named in his honor. It is the AI Malcolm post office on Wild river m upper js.uyuKUK, northwestern Alaska. He also founded the town of Ruby, Alaska. During the first World War, Sandy was too old to join, so he became a physical director in YMCA work during that time. One of his pupils was Jimmy Doolittle who was a young boy at that time in Nome. Sandy, who left Alaska 2V& months ago, plans to be back there in June. He says of the Northland, There is some thing beckoning about country whose rivers all run north, pouring out their wat ers on the top of the earth. Sandy knows ' where there is a small island stacked high with ivory walrus tusks where there is a river whose waterfalls tumble over green stones agleam with copper nuggets. He has seen large quantities of jade and in one place he followed a single seam of coal for 150 miles. Long- Lived Family When asked what he at tributed h?s many years to, he said he came from a long lived family. His grandmother lived to be 114; his grand father 111; his father 105 and his mother 98. Both his grand mother and mother raised 14 children. v When this writer mention ed to Sandy the contributions he had made during his life time and asked him if he did not wish to retire, he said, "Retire? No. I am going back to the Northland. My one dream is to see this country- so rich in natural resources developed and put to use." Sandy, often called indes tructible Sandy, is leaving soon for the Northland. As for the dream who knows?
