He brought out a long, pre cussion musket that looked like many another gun of Civil War vintage, except that it had two hammers and only one trigger and one bar rel. The barrel, over 40 inches CHERRY DESIGN ON GLASS A sign in the store window announced that the entire stock had been cut 50 per cent in price for an inventory sale. I looked swiftly through the display of glass and china to see if the goblet with the cherry design on it was still there. It was, and the price had not been hiked for the purpose of the sale. It still read $12. I went inside to axamine the piece. Except for a scal loped lip it had the general goblet shape, but otherwise it was memorably different from most of its genre. The design about the middle and lower part of the bowl the upper part was perfectly smooth consisted of a cherry branch on which were occasional leaves and bunches of three cherries. It was highly rep resentational in concept, so much that one felt he could almost pull the cherries off, despite the fact that they and MANY RARE U.S. BOOKS FOUND IN FOREIGN LANDS Many of the rare American books are just about as likely to be found in foreign coun tries as they are in the United States. A friend of mine, returning recently from a hunting trip in northern Ontario, stopped overnight in a small Canadian town that was big enough to have a book store. The book which attracted his attention was a Victorian looking volume "with the title "May-Day and Other Poems." The price was $1. He bought it, and it was such a success that he took it home with him. But he doesn't have the book any more. His son ap propriated it. It is a fairly rare design that was produced back in Pittsburgh, Pa. in the 1870s and which is usually found only in clear glass. As I paid for it, the prop rietor reached down beneath the counter and brought up a pitcher of the same design, and also of milk glass. It was a beauty, of a good two quarts capacity. The pitcher in that design is so rare that I had seen only once before. "How much?" I asked, cal culating that if ifcjwere not over S30, I would buy it. It had the proper marks of a first edition. It was pub lished by the well-known firm of Ticknor and Fields, in 18CF. There were four pages numbered in Roman numerals and 205 in Arabic. Though the cloth binding was faded, it was otherwise in good, clean condition. The value was given as ranging from S100 to $200. But the youngster isn't sell ing it. He reasons and quito rightly that inflation win hit the rare book market just as it does everything else. The attitude that children's first teeth are not very im portant is like looking through the wrong end of a telescope. Dental disease is so wide spread that not all the dentists in the country working 24 hours a day for years on end could even begin to catch up with the problem. If you have reached age of 35, chances are you have at least 18 missing, filled or de cayed teeth. And later you may be jolted to find that middle age and a need for arti ficial dentures arrive at the same time. Since they are the advance guard for the permanent teeth the teeth that are supposed to last a lifetime early loss of the baby teeth can cause the second teeth to come in out of position. The result may be prema ture loss of the permanent teeth, so - called "crooked teeth," poor mastication of food, possible deformites or irregularities in development of the jaws and facial con tours, and difficulty in speech. The new system will re lease a clerk for three or four hours to do something else, Mrs. Hopkins explained. It replaces the old system since one writing will take care of several required forms. Under the old system, when a fine was paid or bail for feited, a receipt had to be made out, two or more file cards, a recapitulation of the receipts and the recapitula tion had to be transferred to reports for the state, county treasurer, county court and the county clerk's office. Now by use of carbons this can all be taken care of with one writing.
