As a matter of fact, these girls are so concerned about my welfare that they do not let me drink as much as they do. They call me "Baby" and really take care of me as if were one. I some of the material raw. what happens Is that in the stomach the digestive juices open up the nodules and let the tiny worms out. They dig their way through the walls of the stomach and travel out through the body to grow in the muscles of the victim. As a result, the person may get such pains all over that he thinks he has a severe rheu matism. His eye-lids may swell up. A great increase in the numbers in the blood of cells called eosinophiles can encystedj often give the doctor the a trichina. If hunch he needs to go on and make the correct diagnosis. Evenutally, the little worms all become sealed- off, each in its little capsule, and then the patient can get well. , I remember a rancher and his sons in the mountains of California who became so ill that one or two of them died. An inspector from the State Board of Health who went up to the ranch to see what kind of a disease they had, discov ered it was a very severe form of trichinosis. "What had hap pened was that the rancher shot a bear which had been killing and devouring hi hogs. The bear had become full of trichinae, obtained from the hogs; and when the ranchers ate poorly-cooked bear meat, they caught the disease. If they had only known enough to stop eating the bear meat they might have weathered the first storm, but they went on eat ing. Lymphedema Hundreds of people ask about lymphedema. Some times a beautiful girl will be terribly unhappy because one or both legs are much too big. Usually, the doctor who ex amines her sees nothing wrong except the swelling of the tissue under the skin. The trouble is not due to varicose veins and it is useless to fuss with them. Every so often see some unfortunate "person who has been operated on for varicose veins, when, actually her veins were not very large, and they had. nothing to do with the swelling. Such swelling is due to something wrong with the lit tle lymph channels through which flows the lymph a watery fluid which bathes the cells. I imagine that some peo ple weie born with some pe culiarity in these channels that keeps them from carrying the lymph away as well as they should. There is an oper ation in which the surgeon cuts out the swollen tissue under the skin but it is dan gerous and difficult, and sur geons tell me they hate to at tempt it. Apparently, the re sults are not always satisfac tory. There is another opera tion in which skin from an arm is used to make a by-pass around the place where the lymph channels are obstruct ed. Sometimes the new elas tic type of stocking which is not very conspicuous will help. 4-GS CLUB HEWS Antelope 4-H Club The Antelope 4-H Clothing club held a workshop meeting at'Paulette Anderson's home on Jan. 25. S. should not excuse her disapproval of Sue's friends on the grounds that it "doesn't look right to other people." She should not be afraid to be called a prude when she rightfully opposes her d a u g h t e r's running around with a hard-drinking, free-talking crowd. Sue shows she is very child ish when she gloats over the fact that she is doing some thing that shocks Mother. She is undoubtedly deeply shock ed herself and this lends ex citement to her association with a group that is beyond the range of her interest and experience. She also undoubt edly finds childish satisfaction in being petted and "babied" by these girls. It's quite unusual for a group of older girls to be will ing to take in a girl of Sue's age and it seems very likely that these girls have some special use for Sue! Perhaps they like to use her naivete as a foil for their jokes, or they play off their mature charms against her. They in evitably fall into some odd kind of relationship with Sue because she is simply not real ly, one of them. In any case, it is not a good relationship for Sue, who ought to be going out with girls of her own age and men of an appropriate age. It would be a good idea if she changed jobs and got off to a fresh start socially. (Copyright 1958, General Features Corp.)
